Qi charging iPhone 12

Hi. I have a new 2021 Volvo XC60 with a built in wireless charger for phones.

I also have a brand new iPhone 12.

I can’t get the phone to connect to the car (or visa versa). It connects for a second and the phone displays the battery in green (charging) but then it disconnects and the Volvo displays an error message

Wireless charging not active clear the charging area from other objects.

the charging unit is on.

I heard that others are experiencing issues with Qi charging the iPhone 12. Where do we report these specific issues to Apple? Here?

I was just on the phone with my Volvo dealer and they told me that they had been in contact with Volvo about it. Volvo indicated that there will be a software update in the 2nd quarter of 2021. You will have to book an appointment at the dealer to install the update. He told me to call them around Easter because that’s around the time where they expect the software to be released.

Yeah. Great to get this issue resolved. I live in Norway and I have an appointment May 19th to install the update for my XC60.

I have the same problem. My car is the Ford Edge 2021. The wireless charger works perfect with my friends iPhone 8 but it doesn’t work properly with my new iPhone 12 Pro Max!

Today i received the same reply from Volvo, stating that iPhone 12 is not Qi-certified, and that Volvo is not going to launch any fix for this.

I also discovered that after updating to iOS 14.3, I managed to get the phone charging by leaving it on the top right side of the charging deck in my XC90.

I have exactly the same problem with QI charging in my XC40 2019 - So far it worked perfectly past 2 years with iPhone X, iPhone 11 and now with my new iPhone 12 I always have to reposition the Phone to be charged. Since it worked with all previous Phone Generations and other Android Phones from friends I assume it´s related to iPhone 12. I´m thinking of switching to an other Phone if this gets not solved.

I actually just ran into this too. I talked to the dealer, it’s a known issue with the 12s and they’re working on a fix.

I have the same issue with my XC90 and iPhone 12 Pro. It seems to be resolved if I remove the case (Apple magsafe case).

Just tested my iPhone 12 Pro in a 2021 XC60. With the case off, the phone briefly shows it is charging for a second, but then errors out.

That can't be exactly what Volvo is saying. In other vehicles e.g. BMW X4 built in 2019, QI charging works with my iPhone12 without any problems.
