iPhone 12 Pro: Facetime / speakerphone microphone audio cuts in and out

My wife recently upgraded from the iPhone X to 12 Pro. For Facetime calls, she frequently positions the phone propped up on her desk (bottom part on desk) so it's hands-free. This seems to cause the audio to cut in and out for the people on the other end of the call. My guess is the noise cancellation to prevent feedback from the speakers is causing it. However, it's not an issue on any of the older model iPhone we've had. We've tried it with both case on and off and tried turning off noise cancellation in the settings, but didn't work.

Is anyone having the same issue? I'm wondering if this might be a software fix in the future or if it's hardware related.

You do realise the main microphone is at the bottom of the phone?

By standing it on something in portrait mode it is very likely you are simply blocking the microphone!

Facing the screen, the holes on the bottom of the phone, to the left of the charger socket, are the microphone.

When you are propping up the phone in portrait mode, make sure those holes are not covered. You can buy specialist phone stands that avoid this problem.

This can also be a problem with the way you hold the phone. I have a tendency to block them with my right little finger which I use as a "stand" to stop the phone slipping through my grip.

I’ve been having this issue as well for over 1.5 years now. I’ve been to the in store apple Genius Bar at least 5 times they’ve reset my phone, gave me a brand new iPhone 11, cleaned my microphones, did not restore from back up, etc. literally tried everything you guys have already mentioned. I called apple at least 10 times and just went back and forth again resetting my phone and iCloud and they wanted me to take screen recording of the issue (even though you can’t hear audio on screen recordings). They would constantly say they never received the screen recordings (I tried sending it to them 3 times and then finally gave up). They don’t want to acknowledge this as a problem and are hoping we just give up on contacting them. I don’t know what to do about this anymore. It’s so frustrating please help apple

I’ve had the same issue with the microphone. Went to Apple Store 6 times and they replaced everything internally and to make a long story long, they have replaced the phone physically twice and I just got this phone this week and it’s doing the same thing. I’ve read everything, Apple Support has tried everything….I so miss the 10. Never had this issue and this is frustrating. I’ll be calling Apple support. I’ve even deleted everything and manually installed each app which took forever but I’ll try anything and second call, mic dropped🤷‍♂️

Hello, I don't think it's blocked because the Voice Memos app and Videos still pickup the audio fine when the phone is in the same position.

The only thing I can think of is the noise is reflecting off the surface causing the noise cancelling to activate and turn off the mics intermittently. We don't have the issue with the iPhone X, so wondering if it's a software issue or if the hardware components were moved in the 12 (or the 11).

I recently upgraded from the iPhone 8+ to the 12 as well and having the same problems. Verizon had restated my Network Settings and the noise stop on the receiver side for a little and then it came back. We fixed the SIM card did a hard reset...nothing. Apple then did a software diagnostic and said it was good so now I have to take it to Apple to do a hardware test on it. I’m close to just having them giving me a new iPhone 12 and turning the one I have in.

YES I have the same issue. Every time that the person on the other end talks at the same time as me, my audio will cut off on their end, leaving them unable to hear me when both of us are talking at same time (or external noise comes from her end). I also have the 12Pro. I was debating on returning this phone and seeing if it was just a problem with my phone. Should I?

I am having the same issue. It doesn't matter whether I have a case on or off. It doesn't matter if I have it in landscape or portrait mode. I had it tested at Apple and they said there were no issues. So I have no idea what to do at this point. It's frustrating to say the least. I end up getting off the phone and texting because I get tired of other people not being able to hear me. My 8 plus did not have this issue. I regret trading it in.

I have the same issue on iPhone 12 Pro Max, I sent it back for repair but 2 hours after Apple received it I got a message that the phone was coming back and the problem was not reproducible so from Apple the iPhone is ok.

I got the phone back and as soon as I finished the setup I called a friend and the problem still persist, FaceTime, normal calls, etc. With/without case, with/without noise cancelling, nothing works.

I am an Apple user since the first Apple and apart from the Nand memory issue on iPhone 6 128 GB I never had issues until now.

sold my iPhone XS 512 GB for this crap and this IS A SHAME!

The worst part is that if this is a hardware issue then even a replacement phone could not work.

APPLEEEEEEE FIX IT PLEASE
