iPhone 12 Pro: Facetime / speakerphone microphone audio cuts in and out

My wife recently upgraded from the iPhone X to 12 Pro. For Facetime calls, she frequently positions the phone propped up on her desk (bottom part on desk) so it's hands-free. This seems to cause the audio to cut in and out for the people on the other end of the call. My guess is the noise cancellation to prevent feedback from the speakers is causing it. However, it's not an issue on any of the older model iPhone we've had. We've tried it with both case on and off and tried turning off noise cancellation in the settings, but didn't work.

Is anyone having the same issue? I'm wondering if this might be a software fix in the future or if it's hardware related.

Yes! We are having the same issue. And also did not have this issue with iPhone X or iPhone 7. We now both have iPhone 12 and while speaking to my wife she places the phone on counter on speaker while she washes dishes, cooks etc. Sound begins to cut in and out eliminating her voice at times, along with everything else at times. This must be some software glitch.

Mine does the exact same thing. I have taken it to the Apple store numerous times and they can’t find an issue. They even changed the whole inside of the phone and it still does it. They said they can’t replace the phone if they can’t find a problem with it and told me it was an environmental problem. They said they have not heard of this problem before. It is very annoying that we pay this much for a phone that you can’t even talk on the speaker phone..

I also switched from an iPhone X to the 12 pro and have the same issue. I have ran diagnostics, restarted the phone, turned FaceTime off and on, tested the microphone by recording a voice memo and a front facing video recording, reset my phone completely and backed it up again. Everything comes back normal. I haven't even had the phone for a month yet but at my Apple appointment they told me they don't swap out phones anymore which is infuriating considering it's been happening since day 1 and I paid money for a fully functioning phone. I have a second appointment today which I'm considering not even going to because the tech told me if resetting the phone and backing it up again didn't work, I would have to erase everything again and try using it as a completely new phone without my backup. They think something I'm bringing over from the backup is what's causing the issue. Then, he said if that didn't work, they would have to fix the mechanics on the inside that may be causing it. WHY WOULD WE NEED TO DO THIS ON A BRAND NEW PHONE?? Apple, please fix this!

Apple told me that it was an ANTENNA issue.....So they replaced my iPhone 12.....What a waste of time! Same dam Apple problem with the new phone and I can't use the phone for speaker hands free unless I'm in my car...Strange! THIS IS A HARDWARE ISSUE! There are way too many of us that have the same identical issues. If it was a software issue they would of by now had a fix for it! HARDWARE ISSUE! Apple Care doesn't Care!

They won’t recall the phone I had the same problem with my iPhone 11 pro and Apple denied there was a issue and said I was the first they ever heard of this and after months of calling and going back and fourth with them they finally sent me a new phone to only have the same issue so much for a isolated problem and so I bought the iPhone 12 Pro thinking that would solve my problem well wrong again so now after years of being with Apple from the very first iPhone to the 12 I finally bought my my first android a galaxy S21 and I have to admit it is a better phone and no issues and I’ve always been a Apple guy and still have my iPhone 12 and hoping Apple does the right thing but some how I don’t think so

Curious if anyone else is noticing that it seems better on iOS 14.5.1

I updated to the latest as soon as it came out, and facetimed yesterday with my mom. She said she had no issues hearing me, never cut out. I'm wondering if it's secretly fixed in the latest version, or at least they did some tuning to the audio to mitigate the issue. I'll try a few more times in different environments before I declare it fixed.

There is only one solution here. Talk to newspapers, websites, etc etc

if this story doesn’t get out nobody will ever get anything fixed here.

Apple sold millions iPhones and here we are. The majority doesn’t even know that the problem exists or why or that affects so many iPhones. Lots of people do not even know how/where to complain about .

the problem exists and apple has to respect customers and fix it

Apple is not fixing anything I had this same issue with my 11 pro and they replaced it to only have the same issue and so I bought a 12 pro thinking that would solve my problem again to only have the same issue . I have made numerous phone calls to Apple and still nothing and again they said they would send me a new phone saying that it doesn’t happen on all phones to try another one this is bullshit why don’t they just correct the problem there are obviously plenty of people with the same issue

Sorry to say there is no fix Apple has had me factory reset my phone but still have the same issue it’s good for a few days but it comes back they tried say there was a corrupt file in one of my apps and not to download anything from my iCloud backups which I did not and still have this issue so and not to mention if I have a corrupted fil than that means everyone else out there on this support page has the same corrupt file highly unlikely

Exact same issue, upgraded from iPhone 6 to iPhone 11. I returned and bought exact same model twice, tried different methods to setup the new iPhone’s, and also had an in-person session with a Genius/Apple tech, but all of these were nowhere near the solution.

Today I tried turning down the volume a bit and used the phone sideways (landscape orientation) during the video calls and voila! Also entirely upside-down works but is unusual.

Definitely this needs to be addressed and Apple staff should be a bit more aware of this known issue. The noise-cancellation is no bueno. Using the mute button as suggested already is a great way too, or just play with the volume time to time. Other solutions I could think of would be using items such as AirPods, Bluetooth speakers, other earbuds and headsets.

Recently switched over from an Android to an iPhone 12 Pro and ended up with this problem. The issue seems to be intermittent and appears only after 5 mins or so in a FaceTime or WhatsApp Video call. I contacted support who told me to restore the phone from a backup but it didn't help.

Also tried turning off noise cancellation, removing my phones case, cleaning the mic.

Regretting my decision to switch to an iPhone :(
