iPhone 12 Pro: Facetime / speakerphone microphone audio cuts in and out

My wife recently upgraded from the iPhone X to 12 Pro. For Facetime calls, she frequently positions the phone propped up on her desk (bottom part on desk) so it's hands-free. This seems to cause the audio to cut in and out for the people on the other end of the call. My guess is the noise cancellation to prevent feedback from the speakers is causing it. However, it's not an issue on any of the older model iPhone we've had. We've tried it with both case on and off and tried turning off noise cancellation in the settings, but didn't work.

Is anyone having the same issue? I'm wondering if this might be a software fix in the future or if it's hardware related.

You do realise the main microphone is at the bottom of the phone?

By standing it on something in portrait mode it is very likely you are simply blocking the microphone!

Facing the screen, the holes on the bottom of the phone, to the left of the charger socket, are the microphone.

When you are propping up the phone in portrait mode, make sure those holes are not covered. You can buy specialist phone stands that avoid this problem.

This can also be a problem with the way you hold the phone. I have a tendency to block them with my right little finger which I use as a "stand" to stop the phone slipping through my grip.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 12 Pro when using it hands free and also had it with my 11 pro which is what made me upgrade my phone in the beginning thinking it was a problem just with the 11 pro . I’ve contacted Apple many times over this issue and even had them replace my phone thinking it was defective and I was told that I’m the first person to ever complain about this problem that there have been no other reported issues with the 11 or 12 of this kind which now seeing other people complain of the exact same issue I know they were lying to me . Not that it makes me feel any better but I at least I know I’m not the only one with this issue . This is a very expensive phone to be having issues like this Apple should address it or maybe someone should start a class action suit against them . Because lying and saying I’m the only one when it’s pretty clear that I’m not obviously is not the answer

I also brought iphone 12 pro on 18th March 2021 for my Md but to my surprise I got the complain that when we use facetime or whatsapp call there is a audio cut so I went to future world from where I have brought the device and after checking by them they told it is ok, but I was not satisfied so then I went to the service canter and they checked the phone through their hardware testing machine and told evey thing is fine but there is dust in it I will get it cleaned and it will work fine, then also I asked them it is less than one month and you are telling there is dust how it is possible . Still they returned the phone after cleaning but the problem is not resolved so who will help if we have to face such issues after purchasing a so high value and best company phone

Apple told me that it was an ANTENNA issue.....So they replaced my iPhone 12.....What a waste of time! Same dam Apple problem with the new phone and I can't use the phone for speaker hands free unless I'm in my car...Strange! THIS IS A HARDWARE ISSUE! There are way too many of us that have the same identical issues. If it was a software issue they would of by now had a fix for it! HARDWARE ISSUE! Apple Care doesn't Care!

Apple is not fixing anything I had this same issue with my 11 pro and they replaced it to only have the same issue and so I bought a 12 pro thinking that would solve my problem again to only have the same issue . I have made numerous phone calls to Apple and still nothing and again they said they would send me a new phone saying that it doesn’t happen on all phones to try another one this is ******** why don’t they just correct the problem there are obviously plenty of people with the same issue

Sorry to say there is no fix Apple has had me factory reset my phone but still have the same issue it’s good for a few days but it comes back they tried say there was a corrupt file in one of my apps and not to download anything from my iCloud backups which I did not and still have this issue so and not to mention if I have a corrupted fil than that means everyone else out there on this support page has the same corrupt file highly unlikely

Recently switched over from an Android to an iPhone 12 Pro and ended up with this problem. The issue seems to be intermittent and appears only after 5 mins or so in a FaceTime or WhatsApp Video call. I contacted support who told me to restore the phone from a backup but it didn't help.

Also tried turning off noise cancellation, removing my phones case, cleaning the mic.

Regretting my decision to switch to an iPhone :(

All the 12 series do it. So annoying. I’ve been dealing with Apple for months, I’ve had the back hardware repaired, I’ve had numerous calls with technical support. I’ve been to the Genius Bar 3 times and even had my phone replaced with a new one. I’m at a loss and stuck with this phone for the best 20 months. So frustrated because Apple is doing nothing about the issue

YES!! recently upgraded as well, have tried a total Reset, a new SIM card which neither worked. Just received my replacement today from Verizon and have made one call so far and it was still doing it. Will continue to try it out for a couple more days before I call them again. I upgraded from the phoneX and NEVER had these issues. My son has the 11 Pro Max and he doesnt seem to have issues. Very annoyed

I too am having this problem with my iPhone 12pro. I upgraded with AT&T in May and thought I just got a lemon. When on FaceTime the other party said I was cutting out. I returned that phone and went back to my IPhone XS. I NEEDED a new phone because my battery life on the XS was so bad (I’m training for a ultra marathon and need a battery life for more then two hours). I went back and got another iPhone 12pro thinking surely I had gotten a lemon the first time. NOPE! I made a few FaceTime calls with zero issues, I then put a case (bought off Amazon) on it and BAM audio keeps cutting out. Took the case off and restarted it and it’s still cutting out. I honestly don’t know what to thinking anymore.
