Cannot connect printer after Big Sur update

Couple of days ago I updated my MacBook Air with macOS Big Sur. After that my printer Epson L220 stopped working. Now I'm trying to add this printer via USB but getting the message: 'An error occurred while trying to add the selected device.successful-ok-ignored-or-substituted-attributes'.

Also tried Epson Connect Printer Setup but it cannot find the printer at all.

Don't know what to do now.

Hello Alfredalsie,

Have you checked whether a new XP-220 driver download for Big Sur is available?

If there is a problem with USB, you may want to try using a network (Wi-Fi) connection to a router instead.

Also, try resetting the printing system and re-adding the printer.

well ... I tricked it to finding the epson ... it lists my oki laser printer automatically but not the epson. so when I added the oki ... I pressed add again , chose the oki and put in the name of the epson which then added it to my list of printers. but now it is not recognised - tried to send through a self-test page and it says 'in use' but it just rolls along trying to find the printer. it rolls along infinitely without finding the machine. the printer utility won't launch.

so frustrating. not sure what else to do - I have restarted and unplugged plugs and network ... nothing seems to be working.

Hi Jan,

so I finally updated to Big Sur as well and have the same problem with my Epson Stylus R200.

I downloaded the Epson Software Updater Version: 2.6.0 from epson.eu, restarted but it is still not printing and showing the same error message when trying to set up the printer: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device.

successful-ok-ignored-or-substituted-attributes".

I hope you have a solution for me as well???

Thanks so much in advance,

Chi

Thanks Jan ... I did all the switching off, resetting, unplugging etc. this time its the other way around in that my Epson popped up and is on the list but the OKI is just coming up on the list. in fact this time Epson popped up twice ... one for Bonjour and one for EPSON TCPIP ... which one do I use? last time it was Bonjour so I added that one. I read about the air print but cant figure out how to get it to work for OKI.

Good to hear that the Epson is working.

Regarding the OKI MC362dn, it is now quite clear that the printer supports the driverless AirPrint technology. I guess that the printer is connected by Ethernet to one of the LAN ports of a Wi-Fi router. The computer must be connected to the same network (wirelessly or wired). The router must be capable of handling Bonjour/mDNS (most modern routers are, but you may have to check the settings). Details about AirPrint can be found, for example, in https://www.oki.com/printing/download/45574702EE4_AirPrint_G_EN_263335.pdf?id=45574702EE .

Alternatively, it should be possible to use the OKI MC362dn with "conventional" drivers. Drivers appear to exist for macOS Big Sur: https://www.oki.com/eu/printing/support/drivers-and-utilities/colour-multifunction/44952104/?os=ab57&lang=ac2 . Before each test, it is wise to reset the printing system. Details about how to add a network printer by its IP address can be found in Add a printer on Mac - Apple Support .

A remote diagnosis is very difficult. I would suggest that you begin by checking IP addresses, etc. Printing configuration and network information reports (for example, https://www.oki.com/printing/download/45002302EE5_MC562_SG_EN_263320.pdf?id=45002302EE#p21 and https://www.oki.com/printing/download/45002302EE5_MC562_SG_EN_263320.pdf?id=45002302EE#p105) can help. All manuals can be found here: https://www.oki.com/eu/printing/support/user-manual/colour-multifunction/44952104/?os=ab57&lang=ac2 .

A current firmware version (at least in the European region) is mentioned in https://www.oki.com/eu/printing/support/firmware/colour-multifunction/44952104/?os=ab57&lang=ac2 .

Dear Jan ... I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help (to all) on this forum. YOUR PATIENCE is a virtue indeed.

again, if only I knew what I did ! ... I been trying everything and then went through your email step by step. tried many times (various IP addresses) add printer that way ... downloaded all the downloads again, reset printers a few times and it seems my impatience required a lesson. somewhere in trying to add printers the epson (always) popped up but the oki didn't ... the last time I tried I just left the add printer thing up and went out ... came back 10 minutes later and voila OKI was listed !

printing and scanning well! THANK YOU SO MUCH. please tell me this is not going to happen with every Mac update. >>> Gina

Hello again,

Thank you for your kind words.

No, one should not have to reinstall printers after a simple operating system update. Unfortunately, there have been many reports about similar problems. It appears to affect printers from different manufacturers, AirPrint models or not. Often, the same driver as used before a system update can be re-used after various manoeuvres. Saying that printer manufacturers generally are responsible for this would hardly be logical. One would at least expect a computer manufacturer not to unnecessarily complicate the use of peripherals like printers.

Anyway, glad to hear that your printers are working now.
