that’s not true. mine cracked without being dropped

If you feel that is the case, make an appointment to have your phone examined by Apple.

They are trained to be able to tell the difference between a stress crack or manufacturing defect and damage due to impact, and stress cracks or defects do occasionally occur as they do with any other product that uses glass.

This thread is valuable to share our experiences however, this tread has gotten a bit out of hand. It is not helpful to generalize that this is an overall problem and it is not helpful to judge people who are experiencing this issue.

For those with phones that cracked (and my back cracked in my first week of owning it), please remember that this forum is only of users and so no one here can actually help you get it fixed. This forum is just so that you can share your experiences with other users so expecting a result out of your posts is unreasonable. Additionally, just because your phone cracked does not mean that it is a general problem with all of these phones. It could be you hit it just right and didn't realize it or it could be a quality control issue that is as small as of an as to only affect just your phone or more widespread to a larger percentage of these phones. That doesn't necessarily mean the design of the phone is flawed. It doesn't mean the glass isn't as strong as previous models. You might have just gotten a phone with quality control issues. No matter how great a product is, there will always be at least isolated quality control issues. No manufacturer is perfect.

For those claiming it is the fault of the users, it is not helpful to judge a situation you did not witness. Besides an initial post suggesting people contact Apple or recommending AppleCare, there is really nothing else you can add to the discussion because you did not experience what these users are experiencing. Please leave this discussion to those that want to share similar experiences.

Apology accepted.

Remember Apple are not obliged to cover “other damage” just because it is in the price list. If so it could cost you the full price of a new phone.

When I bought my present metal bodied iphone 7 it was £299 ($350) and I took the risk that AppleCare+ cost was disproportionate, but when I replace it with a glass bodied phone the risk assessment will probably go in

favour of the additional cover.

Got mine for Christmas as well as an otter box case. Case has been taken off twice. Once to add a screen protector and the second to actually see the break because the spidering was visible in the camera opening. The center of the break is just off to the side of the camera but under the case and spiders out in every direction. I have no clue how it happened but happened within a month of receiving it. Took it to Best Buy and the employee said they’ve never seen a back glass break whilst in an otter box but they were unable to fix it due to the design of the phone. Not sure if I should be upset with otter box or apple but I’m not please nonetheless. I haven’t broken a phone in over 10 years until this.

In this day and age how can you repair smashed glass?

The internals are bonded to the back .

Some countries have lower reality checks on advertising standards but I never did believe the timex on an outboard engine ad or the one that said a certain brand of cigarettes were good for you.

If you drop or bend a phone the chances of survival have always been low, if you submerge it theres a good chance of ruin and if you don’t fit a protector the screen will probably scratch.

Insurance is the answer.

I’m so sorry! Same- I have only had iPhones and have never ever had a phone break like this. Always a case and with tempered glass on front- dropped the phone a lot.

What’s particularly annoying is that the new commercials boast about and show people dropping them with no cases on at all!!

I’m going to go into the Verizon store and Apple AGAIN to see if they will do something.

“.... (They found a way to replace the back glass now)....”

Where did you read that?

Its no mystery, 9 times out of 10 an iPhone will survive a drop to the floor.

They haven’t changed basic construction since iphone 8 and there were glass iPhones before the 6. Drop them and they might break.

Half a billion sales or more, and now increasing sales, tell a different story than your analysis

It has a very sensitive body, even im telling everyone around at home even to put case and take out case with patience and care but they just laugh and be like how can it break however i take my case off, innocent of them that they dont know the real deal whats going with this line up .. consider yourself lucky that you have to pay 104 usd for a replacement whereas where i live has had to pay $1636 to get a new one (including country taxes) fml! And in my country this price is fir the 256gb variant.

I have had 4 different iPhones. I have traded in most and the condition has always been pristine. I have had my iPhone 12 for 4 months and rear screen cracked even with a protective case. I never would have spent over $900.00 on a phone if I knew it was this fragile. Is this a defect? I did not purchase apple care because I never needed any help, support or repair for any of my other phones or computers. Now it looks as if it will cost another $400.00 to fix it. This is too much. I would return this phone and buy a used older, sturdier version if possible. I am more than disappointed. I have been an Apple supporter for so long but feel I have purchased a defective product. Very, very sad.
