Camera on IPhone 12 Pro Max not focusing

So can someone officially from Apple let us know if this is a hardware or software issue?

If it's a software issue, I'll wait, but if this is a hardware issue, I'm trading my iphone for a Samsung Android. I'm so sick of Apple charging an arm and a leg for a defective product.

i am having the same issue but I do believe it is a software issue and not a hardware issue but I could be wrong, I noticed that occasionally under the the overlay where the settings it sometimes show the preview of the photo and despite the it being blurry under that overlay it is not for some reason I will attach a picture I took using the camera then the screenshot of the screen to explain what I’m talking about

Unbelievable they made such a huge error on a flagship phone. Thankfully I returned my 12 pro max and will keep using my 11pro Max which I can actually take close up photos with. If Apple was smart they would try to come up with a solution for this problem. I’m sure there will be lots of returns. This is a key feature for so many content creators.

Apple should come out with some software tweaks to compensate for such hardware limitations.

How can they remain silent after a lot of hue and cry from the consumers like us?

Especially when they charge so heavily for a phone and tout its camera and claim it to be a flagship

I have the exact same issue. Mine is also an iPhone 12 Pro Max, my old device (Galaxy S8) is able to focus closer to objects than the iPhone. Did you guys also noticed it on the frontal camera? It seems it is not being able to focus properly when getting a little bit closer.

Absolutely unbelievable from a company like Apple to overlook this issue with a flagship “pro camera” phone. I’m so glad I returned mine. I will not be getting the 12 pro max until they confirm and fix this issue.

I am facing the same issue on my iPhone 12 pro max. The phone was very expensive and expected a perfect camera module. Not being able to focus less than 11cm is not acceptable for a 1300€ price tag. Tested an iphone 6 and a Samsung S20, both are able to focus at 7cm distance. I took a photo for comparison. I really hope this issue will be solved.

Same here! Just got my 12 pro max and noticed this while trying to take a photo of small products, it wont allow me to focus unless im about more than 4-5 inches away from the object. Apple should release an official statement wether this is a hardware limitation or what. I don't like random forum folks guessing the issue here! My $500 android phone can focus closer and capture more detail than this $1000 dollar phone. I'm returning it if it is a hardware limitation!

So you got from Apple that is not a bug but a kind of limitation of the new larger lens. But I saw on other topics that this issue is also present on iPhone 12 Pro and new larger lens concerns only 12 Pro Max no ?

I don't understand why both 12 Pro are impacted...also iPhone 12 (not Pro) seems not including in this issue. Thinkink that could be a Lidar issue ?

Wow omg this is exactly what mine is doing!!!! Trying to take a picture of this dry patch on my finger, it only focuses and gets a clear image when 4-5 inches away but when I move camera up close I get this. 🙄 This is so not right. We paid over a thousand dollars the least we can get is a camera that can focus in on close objects in a very clear picture.

I have this same problem on my new iPhone 12 Pro Max and that is focus is horrible when close to anything I am trying to take a picture of. My old iPhone 8 Plus was better at taking closer up pictures. Talking about 8-20” length here

Really disappointing... I came back to apple for the first time in years from Android because of the promise of the fantastic camera on the 12 Pro Max. Sadly it's been a real disappointment.

My mother's iPhone 11 Pro max takes significantly better, more focused and detailed photos...

I bought the IPhone 12 PM because of it’s pseudo revolutionary camera system, focus, etc...

And you’re telling me that they screw up the close up shots !?

Shots that I make like 70% of the time !

I’m waiting for a patch since 2 months, that’s what they told us on the phone !

Agreed. Everyone kissing up to Apple needs to realize... these are one thousand to two thousand dollar phones and gadgets. Every year and every new model is promised better than the last. If it has three cameras, it should have better focus and better everything. The model from three years or four years ago shouldn’t be better than the newest. Whether these people know all about tech or not... it isn’t right to make us pay more and more and more and keep coming out with these gadgets if they’re just getting worse than better: 🤷🏼‍♀️

Apple, that´s why Samsung and Xiaomi has overtaken you. Your major triumph were the clients and now you´re on this ridiculously posture against us.
