Improve Maps on iPhone and iPad turns off once Apple Maps App is opened

When going into Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services, the option “Improve Maps” under Product Improvement is switched off. Upon turning it on and using iPhone or iPad normally it does not change. (I have opened various applications and restarted iPhone and iPad, noticing no change while regularly checking the setting.)

Though once I open Apple Maps and check the setting again, it is now switched off.

Any idea what causes this?

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We understand that "Improve Maps" does not remain on. We'll be happy to help.

To see if you continue to experience the same behavior, we suggest to temporarily turn "Location Services" in Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Then, restart your iPad and toggle on "Location Services" to see if, "Improve Maps" remains on.

In addition, you'll want to ensure that both the iPhone and the iPad have iOS 14.2.1 installed. This helps provide software improvements that can help: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I have done all steps you suggested, though “Improve Maps” still turns off after Apple Maps is opened.

But I cannot update my iPhone or iPad to iOS 14.2.1.

Either I do not see the option for it, or 14.2 is the same as 14.2.1—which I don’t think is the case. Is it a beta version?

Thanks for getting back to us. Apologies for the misunderstanding, iOS 14.2.1 is only available for the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 mini.

We suggest to reset your location settings to factory default and see if that helps. To perform this step, you can go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Location & Privacy. When your location and privacy settings are reset, apps will stop using your location until you grant them permission. Then see if, "Improve Maps" remain toggled on.

I have reset my Location & Privacy settings and restarted my iPhone. But still no luck—“Improve Maps” still toggles off once Apple Maps is opened.

It might be an issue with “Significant Locations,” as “Improve Maps” needs this feature to work. I do not want to clear my location history, however.

I am going to switch to a new iPhone 12 soon and see whether the issue persists or not. If it does not, it is perhaps tied to issues with older iPhone and iPad models. (I am currently using an iPhone 6s and an iPad Pro 10.5’’, both with the same issue.)

I will get back to you once I test it out on the new iPhone!
