Mac Mini M1 - Bluetooth Drops & Wake Thunderbolt Display

Hi All,

I have a 2020 M1 Mac Mini. It hooked up to my Apple Thunderbolt Display 27" via an Apple Thunderbolt to Mini Display Adaptor. (This worked great with my old MacBook Pro 2019) I am also using the Black Apple Magic Keyboard and the Black Magic Mouse 2

Since getting the M1 Mac Mini I have noticed a couple of hardware issues.

First, 2 flashing pixels at the top of my screen. It might have been coincidence, but they appeared as soon as I changed from MBP to Mac Mini - I don' have the MBP anymore so I can test the thory.

Second, I get a lot of Mouse and Keyboard dropouts. I have reset the bluetooth module and factory reset the keyboard and mouse but it still happens.

Third, often the screen does not wake up out of sleep. I thought it was because the keyboard and mouse had lost connection, but I can still control them via VLC, this should also wake the screen, so this is now how I reboot the Mac for the screen to work again.

Just thought I'd put these issues out there incase I'm not alone.

Thanks

In my case I cannot use the HDMI port as my monitor needs to use USB-C to get the correct resolution ( I'm using a Dell 49" Ultra Wide 5112x1440px ) and I have 2 monitors, so I need to use both available ports. I have tried everything you can find out there on google and here in the support area. Also experiencing iPad and iPhone disconnects and they are wired into USB ports. Using external USB Hub with external power doesn't help too.

The only workaround I have found is to disable the WiFi and get ethernet wired.

Apple still in silence.

I use a wired keyboard and a bt mouse and have the same issues. I've been able to get the screen back by unlugging the monitor cable from the mini and plugging it back in. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. What's weird is that if I unplug it and flip the cable over, it's worked every time. I took it into Apple and they think it's an OS bug and will get fixed eventually.

I don't have any data points concerning the Bluetooth drops - my keyboard and mouse are wired.

Last night I set the Energy Saver pref to turn the display off after 30 minutes, but I checked the "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically..." setting.

This morning when I hit my space bar the monitor woke properly. I then forced the monitor to sleep, walked a way for a bit, and returned and the monitor woke properly again.

I should note that I'm using the Aerial screensaver, but that doesn't seem to be effecting anything one way or another.

Thanks - unfortunately I cannot hardwire to my router based on the location of my computer in my office. One strange thing this evening that seems to be working for me though - I swapped out the TB3 cable that came with the LG Ultrawide monitor for the HDMI cable that came with the monitor. I am now connected with 3840x1600 resolution at 75Hz. Strangely enough, this has brought the monitor online every time I've tried to bring the Mini out of sleep this evening. I am optimistic this may be working for me, but I'll leave it sleeping overnight to see if it comes out of sleep in the morning as expected or if it will require another hard reboot after sleeping so long.

I forgot one step. Sorry. After the SMC reset, she also had me go the login items for my computer user account and delete all of them (I only had two), and restart the computer. That seemed to improve the persistence of the problems but they were still occurring. After that, she had me create the second account, etc., as noted in my prior post.

Sounds like you have an Apple Cinema Display, NOT a Thunderbolt Display, those two may look the same on the exterior, but they are NOT the same. I haven't seen videos or photos of it yet, but people with them are saying that the 27" THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY does indeed work with M1 Macs. The only thing you need is the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter from Apple.

I have the Mac mini M1 with 16GB memory and 512GB SDD, 49" Dell monitor plugged on USB-C and a 23" Dell monitor plugged on HDMI. 2 Magic 2 keyboards, Magic Trackpad, Beats Studio 3, Apple Watch and a Logitech MX mouse using it's own bluetooth adapter. If I leave the Wi-Fi On, the bluetooth connectivity on all devices turns into a mess at the exactly same time. When I say mess I really mean it. Looks like the M1 Macs Just Don't Works :(

It is strange... but I am happy to say that upon coming down to my office this morning and hitting the spacebar, the Mini woke up and the display opened up to the Lock Screen with no problems whatsoever. It is bizarre because I know others have described this same problem with HDMI instead of TB - but switching to the HDMI seems to have solved the problem for me.
