Mac Mini M1 - Bluetooth Drops & Wake Thunderbolt Display

Hi All,

I have a 2020 M1 Mac Mini. It hooked up to my Apple Thunderbolt Display 27" via an Apple Thunderbolt to Mini Display Adaptor. (This worked great with my old MacBook Pro 2019) I am also using the Black Apple Magic Keyboard and the Black Magic Mouse 2

Since getting the M1 Mac Mini I have noticed a couple of hardware issues.

First, 2 flashing pixels at the top of my screen. It might have been coincidence, but they appeared as soon as I changed from MBP to Mac Mini - I don' have the MBP anymore so I can test the thory.

Second, I get a lot of Mouse and Keyboard dropouts. I have reset the bluetooth module and factory reset the keyboard and mouse but it still happens.

Third, often the screen does not wake up out of sleep. I thought it was because the keyboard and mouse had lost connection, but I can still control them via VLC, this should also wake the screen, so this is now how I reboot the Mac for the screen to work again.

Just thought I'd put these issues out there incase I'm not alone.

Thanks

Hi,

Not exactly the same... but...

Just bought a base model MacBook Air m1 chip.

when I connect my MacBook Air, with m1 chip, with an usb-c to HDMI adapter (no matter the model and or make of the adapter tested 5) the wifi falls ... does not turn off just fails (wifi signal keeps high but no connection to web) a few seconds after web connection resumes....

This does not happen with neither of my other MacBooks (air or pros intel version).

Hope a fix soon!

I have the Mac mini M1 with 16GB memory and 512GB SDD, 49" Dell monitor plugged on USB-C and a 23" Dell monitor plugged on HDMI. 2 Magic 2 keyboards, Magic Trackpad, Beats Studio 3, Apple Watch and a Logitech MX mouse using it's own bluetooth adapter. If I leave the Wi-Fi On, the bluetooth connectivity on all devices turns into a mess at the exactly same time. When I say mess I really mean it. Looks like the M1 Macs Just Don't Works :(

I am experiencing the same issues out of the box with a brand-new M1 Mac Mini. I have been unable to wake the computer a single time since setting it up without having to do a hard reboot. I also had the bluetooth issue with my Magic track pad 2 - it was stuttering all over the place until I hard wired it. Keyboard appears to work fine.

I also experience long boot times which is preceded by a strange green screen before seeing the Apple logo which I have never had happen before with any Apple product.

Seems like this forum combined with many reports across the web indicate the new M1 Mini is "not ready for prime time." What's worse is I just experienced the worst Apple support chat I've ever had where "Step 1" of troubleshooting was the guy asking me to re-install Big Sur. I told him this was a documented issue on the community forums and I don't have several hours on a Monday morning to try re-installing OS as the "first step" of troubleshooting this issue and he basically told me "oh well, I guess I can't help you then."

I was told "if this was a "known issue" there may be an update at a later time but until then we can troubleshoot. Would you like to continue to troubleshoot?" Then every time I asked about why they can't replace my brand-new BROKEN computer with a new WORKING computer I was told "we do not send replacements. Would you like to continue to troubleshoot?"

Next response: "Would you like to continue to troubleshoot?" Next response "Would you like to continue to troubleshoot?" So infuriating to have to go through this with a new $1000 computer. It just doesn't work.

So I will give this problem 48 hours or so to try and debug and work itself out, otherwise the M1 is getting returned and I'll try Silicone again next year I guess.

I am extremely disappointed to have to go around and around with support with this when this is a brand-new computer that should turn on and work out of the box. I guess that is too much to ask these days.

Same I experienced the same issue , pixels on the screen , I switched over to my gaming HDMI to see if it would fix it and it was still the same thing . When ever my Mac goes to sleep , it doesn’t wake up the display after taping the screen and moving the mouse . I had to return it and will purchase a new one to see if that fixes it. It could either be a hardware or software issue , I just hope they are able to rectify what the issue is

Thanks - unfortunately I cannot hardwire to my router based on the location of my computer in my office. One strange thing this evening that seems to be working for me though - I swapped out the TB3 cable that came with the LG Ultrawide monitor for the HDMI cable that came with the monitor. I am now connected with 3840x1600 resolution at 75Hz. Strangely enough, this has brought the monitor online every time I've tried to bring the Mini out of sleep this evening. I am optimistic this may be working for me, but I'll leave it sleeping overnight to see if it comes out of sleep in the morning as expected or if it will require another hard reboot after sleeping so long.

It is strange... but I am happy to say that upon coming down to my office this morning and hitting the spacebar, the Mini woke up and the display opened up to the Lock Screen with no problems whatsoever. It is bizarre because I know others have described this same problem with HDMI instead of TB - but switching to the HDMI seems to have solved the problem for me.

This may not be an ideal long-term solution given your dock connections but see if you can try connecting the Dell directly to the Mini via HDMI 2.1 - this worked for me and I have had zero problems in the past 12 hours including overnight sleeping of the system/display. I am not sure why this fixed it versus the trouble I was having with TB3 but it may be worth a try for troubleshooting purposes.

In my case I cannot use the HDMI port as my monitor needs to use USB-C to get the correct resolution ( I'm using a Dell 49" Ultra Wide 5112x1440px ) and I have 2 monitors, so I need to use both available ports. I have tried everything you can find out there on google and here in the support area. Also experiencing iPad and iPhone disconnects and they are wired into USB ports. Using external USB Hub with external power doesn't help too.

The only workaround I have found is to disable the WiFi and get ethernet wired.

Apple still in silence.

I've been having these same problems on my brand new M1 MacMini 8GB/512GB: Constant Bluetooth dropouts affecting my trackpad (keyboard is wired), trouble waking from sleep (taking forever to process my password before fully waking), and trouble with my second monitor coming back on after waking from sleep (primary 34" ultrawide Samsung monitor connected via HDMI; second monitor is an older model Samsung 27" model connected via USB-C port with an HDMI-to-USB C adapter).

I worked with Apple Support and they went through a variety of troubleshooting (e.g., SMC reset). None worked. Then she suggested creating a second admin user account, restarting and signing in as that new user. Sure enough, the Bluetooth problem went away, and the second monitor worked from sleep as you expected it would. Then she had me fast-switch back to my regular user account, and everything continued to work swell from there.

It's been about six hours since this troubleshooting and so far everything's working great. I hope you others find this helpful.

I forgot one step. Sorry. After the SMC reset, she also had me go the login items for my computer user account and delete all of them (I only had two), and restart the computer. That seemed to improve the persistence of the problems but they were still occurring. After that, she had me create the second account, etc., as noted in my prior post.
