M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

After another week with this problem I have discovered that the issue completely resolves (for me at least) when I move the Mac Mini a meter away from all peripherals (monitor and bluetooth keyboard & mouse). Could this be a proximity interference issue? The pink artefacts at boot-up and during the login screen have completely vanished after this 'experiment'.

Well, the software is technically similar or the same as what you're running when you load the full OS. The difference might be drivers but I'm guessing they're the same too. The fact that the hardware test came out okay though tells me that the RAM is likely good and that's a +1 point for the hardware possibly being good and it being a software issue.

The problem seems to occur primarily (and on the previous one I returned for exchange) when a USB device is plugged in close to the unit while it's outputting via HDMI. An external hard drive when plugged in close to the Mac Mini causes flashing pink artefacts to appear in a band like the posted pictures across the desktop. The more I see it, the more it seems like an interference issue.

Apple seems to have put their tail between their legs and scampered away over the issue. Nothing Apple tech support has told me over the issue convinces me they have any intention of getting to the bottom of the problem. It's easier to let tech support be the community of frustrated product users and let them work it out for themselves.

If you're worried about it, return it with all haste, and keep the return numbers up so Apple will take notice.

For myself, I don't feel it's an issue that's going to leave my system broken and unusable. In fact, it's gone away completely - warm boot, cold boot, hdmi, thunderbolt, etc.

I'm on a Mini. It might be more prevalent on one fo the mobiles. Not sure.

I was being 'fair' when I returned the first defective one and gave them a second chance. Now the replacement one is doing the same. First-rev new model or not, Apples a big company who's been in the game a real long time. They would have picked up these issues if they had tested them properly before releasing them into the wild.

It's a silly position to be defending Apple when these issues are occurring, many more people coming out of the woodwork with this problem. Never had issues on any PC I've built or owned of this nature, and sadly this is my first experience with Mac and first impressions last.

Started noticing this on my base M1 Mac Mini around a week or so ago during initial logon about 1/3 the way from the bottom of the screen, tried obvious HDMI cable change to resolve but no dice.

Has anyone else noticed responsiveness drop / 30 second beachball as the pixels occur? Applied latest update last night but not fully put through its paces today.

I also still see the pink squares after upgrading to 11.1, but right now I don't think I'm going to return it.

Why not? I literally only see the pink squares during boot (sometimes) and they disappear fairly quickly once I'm logged in and open an application.

After that they never appear again when working on the computer (so far).

When using sleep mode instead of shutting it down they also never showed up again. It only happens during boot for me.

All is performing great so that gives me hope that it's a software thing during boot.

There are some compatibility issues between Mac mini and ext monitors.

I had this issue twice - reinstalling OS and update to 11.1.

Both issues disappeared after second boot and never came back since...

Definitely software issued swapping Macs will not resolve it.

Just be patient for OS Fix, it will come eventually as Apple is well aware of this issue...

Price we pay for being "first adopters" I guess ;)

The problem is that the corruption is internal. I could move the mouse cursor over my pink display artifacts. If it were a display compatibility issue that wouldn’t be possible. If it’s an HDCP failure then the whole screen would blank out.

Whatever it is is internal. It very well could be software but based on the differences in the way it is presenting itself to everyone here my guess is hardware. It’s possible that a software fix could work around or resolve the hardware issue too.

I used to work for many big names supporting computer monitors, televisions, PCs, etc. Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba were just some of the brands I supported.
