Mac Mini m1 bluetooth problems

Hi, I just got the new Mac mini M1 and from day one I have had big problems with the bluetooth connection. The computer is within an arms reach and has problems staying connected to my Magic Keyboard. It turns on and off. Several times. I even tried placing the keyboard on top of the Mini with out any difference. Some times I have to connect a wired keyboard just to log in. Sometimes the Magic Mouse also has problems. When using both with my old MacBook Pro 2010 they work perfectly.

There is nothing connected to the Mac mini other the the power and there is no ruter nearby that could interfere. The keyboard has fresh batteries also.

It looks like others also have this problem. Is there any one that has a fix. This is really frustrating.

Best regards

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

I just bought a Mac Mini M1 at the beginning of March '21 to use as the main machine in a music studio. I had experienced Bluetooth issues from day one. Needless to say, there are a LOT of connections, wires, hubs, and various other cables running all over the studio. I mention this because there are a lot of potential sources for interference that would be almost impossible to track down.

I turned off WiFi -problems persisted

I turned off the 2.4Ghz band on my router - problems persisted

I turned off FileVault - problems persisted

I turned off Handoff - problems persisted

I reset the Bluetooth Module - problems persisted

I factory reset all connected devices - problems persisted

I unplugged the M1, waited 10 seconds, plugged it back in, waited 5 seconds, turned it back on - problems persisted

I disconnected both USB-A cables - problems persisted

I disconnected the ethernet - problems persisted

At this point, I was really considering just using a wired mouse and dealing with it, or sending it back. Working in Logic with erratic mouse movements is nothing short of maddening.

I was upgrading from a 6,1 Mac Pro which originally had Bluetooth issues prior to various software and OS updates. I had used an Aircable Host XR4 (Bluetooth dongle) with that Mac Pro that solved all of my issues, so I decided to try that with the M1.

Unfortunately, it wasn't recognized when I plugged it in. I tried various ports, hubs, and directly plugging it into the M1. Nothing. The light stayed red and the Bluetooth address was still reporting the built-in module.

On a whim, I thought maybe turning off Bluetooth, plugging in the Aircable dongle, and then turning Bluetooth back on would kick it in to using the Aircable over the built-in module. Outside of some buggy weirdness after turning Bluetooth back on, the Aircable actually worked! FINALLY!

So, you'll need a separate bluetooth dongle and a wired mouse available so you can turn the Bluetooth back on, but the process that worked for me is:

  1. Make sure the Bluetooth dongle is disconnected.
  2. Make sure "Show Bluetooth in menu bar" is turned on in System Preferences>Bluetooth
  3. Check the module's current address (Shift+Option, click the Bluetooth icon). Make a note of this address.
  4. Plug in a wired mouse.
  5. Turn off Bluetooth.
  6. Plug in the Bluetooth dongle.
  7. Use the wired mouse to turn Bluetooth back on. (Mine seemed to turn back on when I plugged in the module. Your results may vary.)
  8. At this point, I experienced some erratic behavior, so I decided to restart.
  9. Restart
  10. Check the Bluetooth menu (Shift+Option, click on Bluetooth icon in top bar) for the Bluetooth address. It should be different from the one noted above.

If all went well, the Bluetooth menu should display the new address, which means you're using the new dongle as the Bluetooth controller. As long as the dongle has been connected, it has persisted through multiple reboots.

This completely solved all of my Bluetooth issues, and I can now reliably use the M1 as my every day machine. It's unfortunate that this requires a third party solution to work, but it's possible that future updates may fix whatever interference is plaguing the M1 Bluetooth controller. I have to think it's a hardware issue since the new controller has no issues, but it's possible the built-in module can be tuned with firmware/software tweaks.

But until then, I hope this works for some people who are unable to get a third party bluetooth dongle to work.

Similar issues here - just unpacked my Mac Mini M1 and migrated from my older Mini. I have an Apple bluetooth mouse/keyboard and I keep losing the connection - but ONLY if I touch anything in the menu bar! Otherwise the bluetooth is rock solid. If I touch anything in the menu bar (wifi settings, Airdrop, Display, Sound) the bluetooth immediately drops out. Craziest thing.

Actually I haven't had any BT issues since my last update a few days ago. My M1 Mac Mini was shut down for the overnight and merely restarted the next day with no BT issues. Trying to trigger the dropped connection via face unlock/wake on my iPhone 11has not triggered anything since I shut down my Mac on the night of all my BT connection issues. So now I can only wait and see if anything triggers the BT issues again. I hope some other community member will update 11.2 to the latest beta so that we can get a better sense if beta 2 has fixed the issue.

Wow. That's great news. Now the other issue that I have with my M1 Mac Mini is the lower read/write speeds using an external NVME ssd (Samsung 970 EVO Plus with Jeyi SSD enclosure USB 3.1 v2 with Realtek RTL 9210 chip) connected to the Mac directly to its Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 port. I'm still getting Write/Read speeds of 805/726 after the beta update (should be closer to 1GB/Second). Perhaps this is a hardware issue that Apple will address with the next iteration of the M1x Mac Mini.

So I installed the latest Beta last night hoping it might fix the bluetooth and lo and behold this morning it just did the disconnect-connect twice thing.

So I am not sure why there are all those articles talking about Apple finally admitting there is a problem and how it will probably be fixed in the next Big Sur release? Unless it is still not in the beta.

Anyone else have the latest update and did it fix your issues?

Yes it is disappointing and frustrating. Like I said though, I hope they maybe haven't included the fix yet. Maybe it will come out as a stand alone update or something?

That said, all we have seen as "proof" that they have even admitted the problem and are working on an "imminent" fix is second-hand information from a journalist who says they told him that. Wish we could actually see a statement from Apple itself.

I am lucky in that my only problem is the irritating disconnect-reconnect twice issue.

Anyone else out there tried beta updates and has it fixed it for you?

And I must retract what I posted regarding the use of Shift+Option+[Click Bluetooth Icon] and factory resetting the Apple connected devices.

Keeps disconnecting.

It is frustrating. I'm using a Logitech mouse and keyboard with a USB dongle to reconnect, but this needs to be fixed by Apple. I do not have any 2.4 GHz WiFi devices, the devices are at arm's length from the Mac mini M1.

Does it help to turn WiFi completely off? I suppose you have 5GHz WiFi, but I'm just curious whether it is same issue I'm having with BT sound. It does not disconnect for good, just interfere for a while (0.5-2s) from time to time. I'm sorry whether I'm hijacking this thread for it could be different issue.

Does anyone know if MBP 13" with M1 is also affected by this problem? I'm so stupid I'm willing to pay another 50% of the price to switch from Mini to Laptop.

Big Sur 11.2 RC running fine. As well is iOS 14.4 RC. Still haven't had a BT incident for almost 3 weeks now so can't tell if the RCs contain the actual fix. One thing 11.2 RC did fix was the connection drop out to listening to an online live stream radio using only cellular data, with wifi turned off, and verbally asking Siri to connect to that live stream. Prior to the RC, the stream would connect for about 5-8 seconds, then drop. Looking forward to more feedback about the RCs from community members.

I too am suffering from the grey screen of death. For what it's worth, I am not sure that it is a bluetooth problem as I dug out an old wired keyboard and mouse and continued to have the same problem. The situation was improved, but not cured, by changing HDMI lead.

I have now spoken to the "senior" Apple support dept twice. I find it surprising that they seemed to have no knowledge of a problem that occupies 17 pages of this forum and has 600 "I have this problem too" responses. Even though they apparently do not monitor (or take an interest?) in these discussions, surely others have called it in?

But at least this helps demonstrate that my mac is not fit for purpose, though I have agreed to try a replacement while retaining my right to my money back.
