M1 MacBook Air "Missing USB Class Driver" when trying to print to Dymo 4xl

I can print wirelessly to my Epson printer with no issues. I downloaded the latest Dymo USB driver 8.7.5 that is supposedly compatible with Big Sur.

I go through the installation and it seems to work fine. The Mac recognizes the Dymo 4xl printer in the print utility. When I try to print directly via a USB connection (no hub) the error message on the print dialog reads "Missing USB Class Driver" and nothing will print.

Here's what I have tried to so far to troubleshoot:

Reset the entire printer system

Rebooted after drive install

Deleted Dymo drive and tried reinstall.

Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

I don't have this printer, so I can't replicate this nor can I test any possible solutions... BUT: This sounds like it might be related to the change in Big Sur that blocks Kernel Extensions that use USB or Networking.

There might be a workaround, though, by booting into Recovery (by holding down Power when starting up your M1 Mac and choosing Options), and then going into the Startup Security Utility and enabling “Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers” (all details available at https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-startup-disk-security-settings-a-mac-mchl768f7291/mac ).

None of our shippers ever liked the dymo anyway. So no skin off my back. We have a lot of these printers and we were fortunate enough that our supplier changed them out for us at no charge. We’re very happy with the brother printers thus far! Hope they work for your organization as well.

I wonder if this problem is with the Magic Mouse and keyboard is just with mini? We have several MacBook Pro M1’s and no problems with anything except the dymo printers.

You are very welcome. If it was a one-off issue with no fix in sight, I would probably be cutting my losses and getting rid of my M1s. But, thousands of people are having this issue and I know Apple will fix it eventually.

The next issue you need to look out for is random restarts throughout the day. Many people are reporting those, and it affects my M1 MacBook Pro but not the new mini.

Larry McJunkin, unfortunately this does not cure the problem, it lags almost immediately afterwards. I tried disabling WiFi (and use wired ethernet) I am unsure but it seems to help a little. Time will tell.

I hope Apple does fix it. I was thinking of sending it back to get the MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, but now that you write there are random restarts - ugh - that is not a viable solution at all.

Why on earth would Apple release things like this when they know they are faulty. Using a mouse & keyboard to control a computer and they fail constantly yet the machines are released.

I just sold my 2019 MacBook Pro 16" to replace it with the Mini - performance wise is ok, but bluetooth is driving me insane.

That's odd - resetting the Bluetooth Module fixes it (although temporarily) on both our computers and for several other friends who have the M1. Sometimes this happens once or twice daily - other times it's 10x a day, and it's definitely frustrating. I would imagine it sill fixes the problem, but the issue is how long until it occurs again. Restarting also solves it, but then it still recurs whenever it wants to.

The random restart issue is a Big Sur problem. It happens to my M1 MBP but has never happened to my wife's M1 Mac mini. One friend of mine has an M1 Mac min and the latest 16" MBP. the 16" MBP restarts several times daily and the M1 mini does not. Seems like luck of the draw, but definitely plaguing many users when you search on it.

I'm having the same issue now. It worked fine for me for the last few weeks, now tonight for some reason it stopped working. I'm updating my mac from Big Sur 11 to 11.1. Let's see if they included a patch for this. But it was working for the last few weeks with the Dymo LabelWriter 4XL. I was able to print through AZ labels, finder, dymo software, etc. My Mac is the M1 Macbook Pro 16gb ram

I know what a Dymo thermal printer is. I just don’t have a Dymo App on my comouter to print as someone above mentioned. I deleted the printer and then added the printer again. Someone above mentioned to delete the printer AND the drivers. I did delete the printer but do not know how to “and delete the drivers.”

mine is still not working as I’m still getting the original error “missing USB ...”
