M1 MacBook Air "Missing USB Class Driver" when trying to print to Dymo 4xl

I can print wirelessly to my Epson printer with no issues. I downloaded the latest Dymo USB driver 8.7.5 that is supposedly compatible with Big Sur.

I go through the installation and it seems to work fine. The Mac recognizes the Dymo 4xl printer in the print utility. When I try to print directly via a USB connection (no hub) the error message on the print dialog reads "Missing USB Class Driver" and nothing will print.

Here's what I have tried to so far to troubleshoot:

Reset the entire printer system

Rebooted after drive install

Deleted Dymo drive and tried reinstall.

Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

I don't have this printer, so I can't replicate this nor can I test any possible solutions... BUT: This sounds like it might be related to the change in Big Sur that blocks Kernel Extensions that use USB or Networking.

There might be a workaround, though, by booting into Recovery (by holding down Power when starting up your M1 Mac and choosing Options), and then going into the Startup Security Utility and enabling “Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers” (all details available at https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-startup-disk-security-settings-a-mac-mchl768f7291/mac ).

As per your advice, I've now just received my Brother QL-1110NWB printer and I can confirm that for my M1 Mac Mini it works just fine over USB.

As a side note, I would like to say, that even though I've only used it now a short time, it seems to be of a higher quality than the Dymo 4XL for shipping labels. Auto-cut feature is great.

Driver support seems much better than Dymo - there was no need to download anything, the Mac Mini detected it automatically and installed the drivers without me touching a finger. Selecting paper size was also easier than Dymo, the presets are laid out with the sizes in mm, instead of obscure names like "legal letter 1/2inch" e.t.c.

Also the printer detects when you're halfway in a label (when inserting a new label roll) and will rewind back to the start of a label - on Dymo you dont have this option, except to skip forward (and thus waste a label)

A bonus that it has bluetooth and WiFi support as well. I will now try it for some time until Dymo release their drivers, but so far I might just keep it as the primary printer and keep the Dymos as backup.

So far however, prices for labels are more expensive than Dymo and its a shame that if I decide to use it, then I have +200 rolls of Dymo shipping labels and 4x printers to stow away, but since its for business use, this is something that must "just work" with as few hassles as possible.

Thanks for your advice - this is finally a viable solution!

All,

I can confirm that after installing the Mac OS 11.1 update on my M1 MacBook Air, the Dymo label printer does print labels once again when connected via USB.

I had to reinstall the Dymo 8.75 driver (with the label printer disconnected). I then restarted the Mac and powered down the Dymo (unplugged) - Connected the Dymo back to USB and then once I plugged the Dymo back in to power, labels started printing correctly.
