M1 MacBook Air "Missing USB Class Driver" when trying to print to Dymo 4xl

I can print wirelessly to my Epson printer with no issues. I downloaded the latest Dymo USB driver 8.7.5 that is supposedly compatible with Big Sur.

I go through the installation and it seems to work fine. The Mac recognizes the Dymo 4xl printer in the print utility. When I try to print directly via a USB connection (no hub) the error message on the print dialog reads "Missing USB Class Driver" and nothing will print.

Here's what I have tried to so far to troubleshoot:

Reset the entire printer system

Rebooted after drive install

Deleted Dymo drive and tried reinstall.

Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

I don't have this printer, so I can't replicate this nor can I test any possible solutions... BUT: This sounds like it might be related to the change in Big Sur that blocks Kernel Extensions that use USB or Networking.

There might be a workaround, though, by booting into Recovery (by holding down Power when starting up your M1 Mac and choosing Options), and then going into the Startup Security Utility and enabling “Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers” (all details available at https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-startup-disk-security-settings-a-mac-mchl768f7291/mac ).

I've been dealing with DYMO issues like this ever since they first made their software available on a Mac. Don't hold your breath while waiting on DYMO to release a new version of the LabelWriter software for Mac. If it's like the past, it will take them months. I finally reached the end of my rope with this and I'll have the satisfaction of tossing my LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo into a lake and buying a Brother label printer which works fine with the M1 MacBook.

FWIW, Apple gave developers way more time to get ready for M1 and Big Sur than in any previous macOS beta...I know because I was on the developer beta. This is DYMO's problem...not Apple's. Same applies for several other high-visibility macOS apps that don't work with the M1. Most were just too lazy to make the switch to a universal app in time for the M1 release date.

My wireless Epson works great. Right now I am using my old Mac as a print server for the Dymo. There are other label printers out there, but I think it would be important to check compatibility prior to switching. I expect Dymo will get a driver update...eventually.

Does anyone have the Dymo support email so we could all hammer them about this?

Well I did just that! Returned all the Dymo printers and bought the Brother QL-1110NWB printers. We print a lot more than 20 labels per day and being able to print from multiple devices has been great!(First full day with it).

Having two computers at all our shipping label printers would not be viable. (I don't think that would be viable for any medium sized business.)

But if your only one person and you're only printing 20 labels a day I guess having a 2nd computer on your desk wouldn't be a big deal. Either way, the Brother QL-1110NWB prints both wirelessly and wired via USB.

Hi Brandon, I took earlier advice and simply purchased a Brother QL-1110NWB printer today.

I was unsure how long Dymo or Apple would take to fix the USB problem, and since I run a company I cannot sit and wait for fixes to come. Therefore I used an older Macbook for the sole purpose of printing labels. The physical space is not so much the problem as the work flow.

Can't run a multi million dollar global enterprise and be content with 2nd hand solutions. Either it works or it dosen't and money for purchasing more printers isnt the issue.

I will keep the Dymo for when the fix comes in as I have 2x 4XL and 2x 450 Dymo printers for our printing needs and after the fix, keep the Brother as a backup incase something like this ever happens again.

So it seems there is something to be done about this - however the bluetooth issues with keyboard and mouse is beyond irritating. So far we have 2x Mac Minis and I held off purchasing more until this issue is resolved too.

Just wanted to add that I’ve got the same issue when printing on an older Epson Stylus Photo 1400 printer. Epson support says that the current driver Printer Driver v10.85, release date 11/23/2020, fully supports BigSur. And it does work on my 2017 Intel MacBook running BigSur. The described error seems unknown to Epson.

Now I’m hoping for an update either to BigSur or the driver.

I'm also having this issue. I contacted Dymo and they were so rude. They said they're in the process of addressing the issue and they may release the required drivers in 2021 – not ideal when I've just dropped £1500 on a new MacBook. I tried to get a better date out of the guy at Dymo and he said February so we'll see.

To my knowledge they had plenty of notice to upgrade their drivers.

I'd urge anyone who bought the printer on Amazon to leave a 1 star review. Hopefully this'll put some pressure on them to fix the issue quicker!
