M1 MacBook Air with external monitor crashes when sleeping

I've gotten several crashes this way. Almost every time I let my MacBook sleep while connected to the monitor. Here's an excerpt of the crash dump:

Just another follow-up:

I set my M1 power saving settings to default now (turning off the display after 15 minutes and allowing the computer to put the laptop to sleep when the display is off).

I actually tested this by setting it to 1 minute and walking away for 2 hours. Came back after dinner, computer was on the lock screen but had not crashed. (this was the expected behavior)

So, again, setting the DP port on the monitor for the Thunderbolt input to DP 1.2 seems to have resolved the issue for me as well. I still have the it set to DP 1.4 on the standard DP input port on the monitor, which is connected to my PC.

I have the same issue as those listed above.

Setup:

LG 34" 34WK95U-W on Macbook Air M1 (8Core).

I have tested with DisplayPort 1.2/1.4 8k cables with adapters to Thunderbolt3 and USB-C. I have tried using the CalDigit TS3 Plus dock, I have tried direct connect. I have now ordered a third-party DisplayPort adapter with the hope that something will resolve this INFURIATING issue.

I have raised the issue with both LG and Apple, neither of which seem to care at all. LG's response was this is an Apple issue and you can guess Apple's response.

At this stage, I am completely unable to work and contemplating purchasing the Apple XDR display so when it plays up I can at least get Apple to help me.

Shocking overall experience. It is atrocious that my previous configuration (which wasn't perfect), worked better despite utilising an external GPU through the Razer Core X to drive my monitor.

@dcinzona Have you had any crashes yet?

@philgeorge jk just hit a panic while the computer was asleep. These ****** nigh terrors. Poor M1 is having toddler sleeping troubles.

I turned on Chrome notifications for gmail and then... BOOM.

I have same kind of issues. M1 Air is connected to my Thunderbolt3 dock (Caldigit TS3 Plus). If I leave my Air connected through the night the laptop has definitely crashed during the night. I am usually greeted just with a black screen and a mouse cursor (cursor moves if I try it with the trackpad.

I have to force power it off with power/touchID button and turn it back on and then I login I get the notification that my computer has had a crash. The culprit seems to vary, sometimes its powerd or cupsd or something else.

I also tried this with the 11.2 RC that was released few days ago and the same problem persists. Yesterday I reinstalled my Air from scratch but it didn't help at all.

I'm getting crashes as well - both when the monitor goes to sleep and when I'm using it. Details:

Setup = MacBook Air M1, LG 34WN80C-B

  • I started with the monitor connected via a Plugable TBT3-UDV using DisplayPort and a wireless mouse and keyboard.
  • I then tried using HDMI to the Plugable (with a DisplayPort adapter) - still got crashes.
  • I then took the Plugable out of loop and connected directly to the LG via USB-C - still crashed.
  • Next I turned off Bluetooth and used the Macbook keyboard - still crashed.
  • So know I'm down to just the Macbook with a wireless mouse.

Thanks for the idea. I've been on the phone with Apple for endless hours and they said that it may be several programs (clean my mac, one drive, and team viewer) that have caused this. They were all deleted and still the same issue. I also have a dell external monitor hooked through a Caldigit-- then to my macbook m1. Almost every evening between 11:30 pm and 7 am it crashes. And this is only once per day or once every other day. Now I was told that I have to erase my whole macbook and start over-- and not migrate programs. I'm thinking that it is a charging or monitor issue as well. This evening, I'm going to charge the old-fashioned way and will keep everyone posted!!

also having this crashing issue. m1 macbook air to apples overpriced thunderbolt cable to a caldigit ts3+. from there it’s display port to a samsung crg9.

sometimes when i wake it i’m greeted with a login screen, sometimes i wake it and it’s just a black screen, but it’s kinda working because my apple watch unlocks it, just no display. sometimes i’m greeted with a crash report. most of the time i have to unplug my thunderbolt cable from my macbook and then plug it back in. then it works.

I doubt the cause of the crashes has something to do with a bad logic board or Touch ID. I received 2 new M1 Macbook Airs. All 3 of them have this same issue and other people I know with that Macbook also have that issue.

So many months and updates later still no fix for such a serious problem (Macbooks crashing after sleep for no reason because they are connected to an Apple branded monitor...)

Who shares my opinion that this is totally unacceptable?

I keep getting the same error too. It happens every time my MacBook Pro M1 sleeps while connected to my external LG 38WN95C monitor. "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
