iphone 12 dropping calls

My iPhone 12 Pro has been dropping nearly all calls since receiving after launch. The tech said "Oh, the diagnostic reported 13 out of 18 calls dropped recently, so that's not good". I purchased through Verizon, and have since gone through multiple resets, SIM card replacements and phone replacement and still have the same issues. All of the support was through Verizon and ultimately Verizon said this was a known issue with Apple and that I should take it up with them. So I just finished testing with an Apple tech, after over an hour on another phone I had to borrow to get this addressed. The Apple tech took it to his level 2 who ultimately said it was a Verizon issue, without a doubt because there is zero chance 2 new phones would have the same issue. They then placed me on hold because they said they wanted to bring Verizon on the call because I told them Verizon said to take it up with Apple. The Apple tech gave up after 35 minutes of being on hold and said we could try again later. Ha!

So no one is owning this known issue and I am stuck with a $1000 piece of garbage. Never again! I am going to have to shell out more money to get another phone and I am absolutely dropping Verizon as well. I would really like to know through all of this, is there anyone with the new iPhone 12 that is not having any dropped calls?

We have iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max both on AT&T and not a single dropped call yet since launch of both.

This leads me to ask those who are having dropped call issues the following questions.

  1. Did you transfer the sim from your previous phone to your new phone? If you did, you should get a new sim which is provisioned for 5g
  2. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data - What is it checked? If you live in an area with minimal to no 5G service (5G is still rolling out across a lot of the world), and your phone is set to 5G, you'll drop calls. Change it to 5G Auto or if you don't have 5G where you live to LTE

Otherwise it seems from those posting here, the common issue is Verizon. You should be hammering Verizon on this as it's most unlikely an issue with the phone. The entity who controls calls on your phone is not Apple. It is your cellular provider.

iPhone 8 worked fine, upgraded to 12 and what a night mare trying to run my business, had to buy another iPhone 8, I just wish I could get my money back or that apple would address the issue and quit playing the blame game, when this contract is up I will likely try a different brand.
come on Apple, step up to the plate and fix issues.

Again, telling Apple to do anything here is pointless. Apple isn't here. Apple isn't reading your comment. Apple isn't going to do anything because you complained here.

Who is your cellular provider? They are who you should be complaining to. There is NOTHING wrong with iPhone 12 as long as the cellular provider is providing the right service to your phone. You also don't suggest you did any troubleshooting. For example did you ever go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice and Data and make sure you had the phone either set to 5G Auto or if 5G is not common in your area, set to LTE instead? Did you move the sim card from your previous phone to your new iPhone 12? If you did, that was a big mistake as older sim cards are not provisioned for 5G service and a newer 5G provisioned sim card should have been put in the phone.

There are loads of things which effect this. Complaining that Apple needs to do something when Apple has NO control over the cellular providers part of getting calls to your phone makes little sense. The common denominator is NOT iPhone 12. It is 5G service being so new and multiple cellular providers beaming different levels of 5G service to their customers. Some of the cellular providers have not done so well in this regard. That is NOT an Apple created issue. That is a cellular provider created issue.

Turning off WiFi calling did the trick for me I've only dropped one call since early February. Before that I had all the issues the folks in this string have been having. It doesn't work for everyone but I have Verizon and it worked for me. I agree though; this is CLEARLY a phone issue, not carrier. And anyway, WHO CARES. Smart tech people: figure it out and FIX IT!

You do realize that Wifi Calling is a Carrier provided feature. If having to turn it off to stop dropping calls, that again points to an issue with Verizon. Wifi calling works perfectly with both our 12 phones using AT&T.

Apple is NOT going to get a clue from you complaining on this user to user only forum. Apple doesn't participate here at all except to moderate posts for adherence to the terms of use everyone agreed to when joining the forum. If you are hoping that the squeaky wheel get's grease from posting here, you're hope is not going to happen. You need to champion your issue with your carrier and Apple directly.

You assertion that just about everyone with iPhone 12 has this problem is patently false. Where is the actual statistic you have to back that up? There are millions upon millions upon millions of iPhone 12 being used in the world. The vast majority are having no issues. If they were, this thread would have blown up with users complaining. And the amount of people complaining here are statistically insignificant in relation to the number of phones out there today.

I don't doubt you have an issue, in case you think I do. I'm sure you do. But to assume everyone else does is a wrong conclusion.

Update:

Here's what has happened.

I went into Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options

I set Voice and Data to LTE

Turned on Data Roaming

Data Mode > Allow More Data on 5G

I then reset my phone and still experienced dropped calls.

I began experiencing data drops, as well. I could call but I was getting ZERO DATA with 4-5 bars.

Sooo.... I called Verizon and got a Senior Technician (I'm guessing high level tech)

We talked about all my settings and he said he was going to "send some codes to my phone"

He also warned one of them would disconnect the call. No biggie!

He also told me the phone would drop the call and then it -should- reconnect to the network.

He told me he would call me back to make sure everything was working good.

He sent the codes and it disconnected the call and then refused to reconnect to the network...

UH OH CRAP!

I waited a half an hour and then put the phone in airplane mode and then turned off airplane mode.

The Senior Tech called me back and my phone has only dropped 3 calls since.

Hope that helps!

No carrier issues with iPhone 8,9,10 or 11
sounds like a carrier issue doesn’t it!!

And iPhone 8, (there has never been iPhone 9), X, Xr, SE or 11 do not have 5g. The issue is with carriers NOT rolling out 5g effectively (each carrier is rolling it out themselves) and users often not setting up 5g on their phone optimally. You simply cannot compare none 5g phones with a phone which is 5g.

In my city, 5G has been rolled out quite well. I'm on AT&T and I have yet to experience a dropped call on either of our iPhone 12 or 12 Pro Max phones. And I make my living being on my phone. My phone is used all day, every day for phone calls.

If 5g is causing issues for you because you may live in a place or are served by a carrier who has not effectively rolled out 5g well, turn 5g off on your phone. Set it to LTE exclusively, which is very simple to do, by going to:

Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > Set it to LTE

Which is a shame as 5g service is pretty awesome, tbh. We had these same issues when 4G/LTE rolled out and people were struggling to transition off 3g service. In the meantime, it's best to just turn 5g off and stick with LTE if it works better where you are. It's still not an issue with the phone. It's an issue with the service provided by the carrier. And Apple cannot fix that.

My dropped calls problems also continue. From all the posts here it still appears to be a problem with certain carriers vs. the phone itself. I have friends with this phone on AT&T with no issues. I have only done one call with tech support at Verizon, but they were very nice and told me how to mark the calls for their log and gave me the phone number directly to tier 2 support so I don't have to go through the normal gates to get help. I'll respond on this thread as I go, hopefully I can get it resolved or may have to get a different phone or a different carrier.

You can't compare a 12 and 11. iPhone 11 is NOT 5G capable and the issues you're having are the same issues other iPhone 12 owners are having on Verizon. In contrast, I'm on AT&T with iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max, with NO issues whatsoever. Just about every poster here in this thread who is having an issue with dropped calls on iPhone 12 is a Verizon customer. That doesn't make iPhone 12 defective. That makes Verizon the issue.

Jan 11, 2021 7:28 PM in response to ChrissyMc13

And just about everyone else on this thread with dropped calls is a Verizon customer. There is some issue with their 5G network and iPhone. With AT&T, absolutely no issues with dropped calls on two iPhone 12 phones in our home. There are a few in my office with AT&T. No issues for them either. No one in my office is on Verizon however.
