iphone 12 dropping calls

My iPhone 12 Pro has been dropping nearly all calls since receiving after launch. The tech said "Oh, the diagnostic reported 13 out of 18 calls dropped recently, so that's not good". I purchased through Verizon, and have since gone through multiple resets, SIM card replacements and phone replacement and still have the same issues. All of the support was through Verizon and ultimately Verizon said this was a known issue with Apple and that I should take it up with them. So I just finished testing with an Apple tech, after over an hour on another phone I had to borrow to get this addressed. The Apple tech took it to his level 2 who ultimately said it was a Verizon issue, without a doubt because there is zero chance 2 new phones would have the same issue. They then placed me on hold because they said they wanted to bring Verizon on the call because I told them Verizon said to take it up with Apple. The Apple tech gave up after 35 minutes of being on hold and said we could try again later. Ha!

So no one is owning this known issue and I am stuck with a $1000 piece of garbage. Never again! I am going to have to shell out more money to get another phone and I am absolutely dropping Verizon as well. I would really like to know through all of this, is there anyone with the new iPhone 12 that is not having any dropped calls?

We have iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max both on AT&T and not a single dropped call yet since launch of both.

This leads me to ask those who are having dropped call issues the following questions.

  1. Did you transfer the sim from your previous phone to your new phone? If you did, you should get a new sim which is provisioned for 5g
  2. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data - What is it checked? If you live in an area with minimal to no 5G service (5G is still rolling out across a lot of the world), and your phone is set to 5G, you'll drop calls. Change it to 5G Auto or if you don't have 5G where you live to LTE

Otherwise it seems from those posting here, the common issue is Verizon. You should be hammering Verizon on this as it's most unlikely an issue with the phone. The entity who controls calls on your phone is not Apple. It is your cellular provider.

It can be a phone issue if all the other iPhone variations don’t do the same thing. It might not be switching between WiFi calling and towers well? Although still has an issue regardless of WiFi calling on or off, cell on or off. Although turning WiFi off completely seemed to help a bit but signal is lowish in the house so it still has some trouble and drops in known drop spots.

I'm suggesting the fact that an older 4G/LTE generation phone is not having an issue is not a reasonable comparison. 5G is new. Many people are having issues with dropped calls due to incorrect settings for 5G in their locations. Or in the case with say, Verizon, issues with their network. Others may have dropped calls for Wifi issues with older routers and less secure connections. It's still unlikely the phone itself, but what the phone is trying to connect to.

Apple will tell you it’s a carrier issue, but can’t tell you what it is. I find it hard to believe they know it’s a carrier issue but don’t know what the issue actually is. And we see these issues across multiple carriers which leads back to the common denominator, the iPhone 12.

I’ve spoken with several senior advisors and the engineer’s report is telling them it’s a carrier issue. Several here say call the carrier (which I have) but they can’t fix the phone and it’s starting to appear more like a switching between cell and WiFi issue which to me sounds like a phone issue not being able to handle the hand off.

I’m tired of the carriers and Apple blaming each other over this issue, Apple needs to step up to the plate and have a sit down with the head of each carrier and make these expensive 12 iPhones function yesterday please, as the older versions have done. It wasn’t too long ago carriers were warning the public that old phones would not work on 5G and needed to be replaced with newer phones, well now the new phones are not working along with my new 12mini and obviously many other 12s are dropping calls too. Apple, please fess up or reimburse all of us that bought a 12 until you and the carriers can get your act together! A phone is a life line and too important in everyone’s daily life for this type of negligence!

You're not speaking with Apple here. Yes, your post was edited, but not by anyone at Apple you seem to want to complain to. There are forum hosts whose sole job is to read posts and either edit or remove posts which violate the terms of use. So demanding Apple do anything here get's you nothing. Do you not understand this is a user to user only forum? No one here can do anything for you.

You need to work with Apple or your carrier directly if you're having issues.

I drop calls from the cell (with WiFi off and WiFi calling off) as well, but that’s why I use WiFi calling because my cell signal is usually 1-2 bars. I did test all configuration of WiFi on/off, cell on/off and I drop every which way. Although when WiFi itself is on (WiFi calling enabled or not) it seems to be much worse. My 11 does not have this problem.

Okay, here’s what I’ve done....I went thru the unpleasant experience of exiting Spectrum mobile service since they are, I’ve learned, considered a knock-off brand of cell service that’s rents from Verizon towers. Therefore I decided I couldn’t trust the strength of their signal. Next I joined T-mobile (2 weeks ago) and they have their own towers along with sprint towers they got thru a buy-out of them. At the same time I researched cell phone cases. What I learned there is that you cannot have any metal anywhere in the case as that too can interfere with signal. My case was clear plastic with a sliver of metal that one pulls out to instantly stand the phone up to read if you don’t want to hold it. So, I removed that case. And started using a flexible poured transparent case with nothing else in it, no glitter, no hard plastics either as I don’t trust some of the recycled components that may be a part of hard plastics. So far, in this 2 week time I have not had a single dropped call with my iPhone mini. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but so far so good.....I do not want a return of that nightmare which was happening everyday. Since learning more about signal interference I do not hold the phone near my ear as I have small earrings that are metal. I also switched to lte in cellular settings as where I live it’s not up to 5G speed yet and 5G signal travels a shorter distance from what I’ve been told, you really need more towers......this experience is all really unfortunate and I shouldn’t have to be a guinnea pig, but I guess that’s what I am🤷🏼‍♀️
