iphone 12 dropping calls

My iPhone 12 Pro has been dropping nearly all calls since receiving after launch. The tech said "Oh, the diagnostic reported 13 out of 18 calls dropped recently, so that's not good". I purchased through Verizon, and have since gone through multiple resets, SIM card replacements and phone replacement and still have the same issues. All of the support was through Verizon and ultimately Verizon said this was a known issue with Apple and that I should take it up with them. So I just finished testing with an Apple tech, after over an hour on another phone I had to borrow to get this addressed. The Apple tech took it to his level 2 who ultimately said it was a Verizon issue, without a doubt because there is zero chance 2 new phones would have the same issue. They then placed me on hold because they said they wanted to bring Verizon on the call because I told them Verizon said to take it up with Apple. The Apple tech gave up after 35 minutes of being on hold and said we could try again later. Ha!

So no one is owning this known issue and I am stuck with a $1000 piece of garbage. Never again! I am going to have to shell out more money to get another phone and I am absolutely dropping Verizon as well. I would really like to know through all of this, is there anyone with the new iPhone 12 that is not having any dropped calls?

We have iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max both on AT&T and not a single dropped call yet since launch of both.

This leads me to ask those who are having dropped call issues the following questions.

  1. Did you transfer the sim from your previous phone to your new phone? If you did, you should get a new sim which is provisioned for 5g
  2. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data - What is it checked? If you live in an area with minimal to no 5G service (5G is still rolling out across a lot of the world), and your phone is set to 5G, you'll drop calls. Change it to 5G Auto or if you don't have 5G where you live to LTE

Otherwise it seems from those posting here, the common issue is Verizon. You should be hammering Verizon on this as it's most unlikely an issue with the phone. The entity who controls calls on your phone is not Apple. It is your cellular provider.

Well, maybe not for you. But I have absolutely NO Issues whatsoever with iPhone 12 or 12 Pro Max at home, around town, in office, anywhere. I'm on AT&T and admittedly, in a city where they have rolled out 5G service to the entire urban area. In areas where 5G may not be available, my phone automatically goes down to LTE as I have it set to 5G Auto.

My husband and I both upgraded to iPhone 12 and 12 mini. His 12 drops the majority of calls. My mini is a little less. Regardless, we've done everything we can to try to mitigate the problem. We first checked with our internet provider because we use WiFi calling in our home. We then moved on to T Mobile and replaced SIM cards, checked settings, etc. As I write this Spectrum is here checking all lines having to do with our residence. From reading other complaints, it seems as though there is an issue with the iPhone 12 itself. Common sense says it's not the carrier, as it's happening with all the major companies.

As consumers we spend quite a hefty sum of money on our phones because they not only serve our business, but are now our primary source for communication as land lines are almost a thing of the past. It's a bit of an insult to be tossed back and forth with the blame game, and when all avenues point back to Apple, it's not addressed. Why is it so hard to say they're aware of all the complaints and addressing the issue? I'm quite sure the customers that use Apple products will still continue to support the company. We're intelligent enough to understand there are kinks in technology, but we cannot function with 10 second calls. Please rectify this.

Yes, that is true. People are complaining about iPhone 12. But that doesn't mean iPhone 12 is the culprit. Phones drop calls through a cellular providers network. We have two iPhone 12 (12 and 12 Pro Pro Max). Both are on AT&T. Neither drop calls at all. There are three other people in my office with 12 phones (12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max). Not one of them is dropping calls. All are also on AT&T.

So your common denominator is only PART of the picture. Who delivers cellular service to the phone is more responsible for the quality of the calls the phone receives. That said, if anyone believes their phone is defective, there is nothing anyone here can do to help. Apple doesn't participate on this user to user only forum. People should schedule an appointment at their Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation. If the cellular receiver is defective (not very likely, but certainly possible), Apple will determine whether the phone should be replaced or not.

iPhone 8 worked fine, upgraded to 12 and what a night mare trying to run my business, had to buy another iPhone 8, I just wish I could get my money back or that apple would address the issue and quit playing the blame game, when this contract is up I will likely try a different brand.

come on Apple, step up to the plate and fix issues.

Again, telling Apple to do anything here is pointless. Apple isn't here. Apple isn't reading your comment. Apple isn't going to do anything because you complained here.

Who is your cellular provider? They are who you should be complaining to. There is NOTHING wrong with iPhone 12 as long as the cellular provider is providing the right service to your phone. You also don't suggest you did any troubleshooting. For example did you ever go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice and Data and make sure you had the phone either set to 5G Auto or if 5G is not common in your area, set to LTE instead? Did you move the sim card from your previous phone to your new iPhone 12? If you did, that was a big mistake as older sim cards are not provisioned for 5G service and a newer 5G provisioned sim card should have been put in the phone.

There are loads of things which effect this. Complaining that Apple needs to do something when Apple has NO control over the cellular providers part of getting calls to your phone makes little sense. The common denominator is NOT iPhone 12. It is 5G service being so new and multiple cellular providers beaming different levels of 5G service to their customers. Some of the cellular providers have not done so well in this regard. That is NOT an Apple created issue. That is a cellular provider created issue.

I guarantee you Telus is the issue. You can blame the phone all you want. But no phone you've had before this phone was 5G. Telus had years to make LTE work well. Now Telus has to make their 5G cellular network work well with iPhone 12. Or you can blame the phone if that makes you feel better. But you're blaming the wrong entity.

Here in the US, I've been on AT&T for years. I have zero issues with AT&T's 5G service. But I have friends here on Verizon, and they're having all sorts of issues. Is it the phone? Of course not. It's Verizon's issue.

Turning off WiFi calling did the trick for me I've only dropped one call since early February. Before that I had all the issues the folks in this string have been having. It doesn't work for everyone but I have Verizon and it worked for me. I agree though; this is CLEARLY a phone issue, not carrier. And anyway, WHO CARES. Smart tech people: figure it out and FIX IT!

I found this thread because I was having horrendous issues with my new 12 Pro Max. I have Verizon (never had any issues prior to getting a 5G capable phone) I was convinced based on this thread that I needed to dump Verizon and move elsewhere but...

I took the phone to Verizon and they replaced the SIM. My settings are set to automatic also (they always were) Here in Portland Oregon we don’t have **real 5G** I’m not sure what that means, but my phone seems to spend a great deal of time on LTE. I have not had any problems since and I am on my phone constantly for business. Also, Apple has a 1 year warranty as well, so if you aren’t getting the assistance you need, have them run a diagnostic on the phone.

It is definitely an odd issue and likely a combination of things.

My suggestion is to cover your *** with the warranty while you can. Apple stands behinds it’s products. They always have for me.

You do realize that Wifi Calling is a Carrier provided feature. If having to turn it off to stop dropping calls, that again points to an issue with Verizon. Wifi calling works perfectly with both our 12 phones using AT&T.

Sorry but that's a poor analogy. If someone is dumb enough to buy a car without a motor, they'll have a metal box which can't go anywhere. But you didn't buy a phone without a cellular radio. You bought a phone with a very good cellular radio, which HAS to communicate with multiple carrier towers. Your cellular provider is responsible for ensuring their cellular signal works with the cellular radio in your phone.

Nope. Again, you are missing the point or just don't understand what you're speaking about. There are iPhone's which can be set to 3G as well. That is completely dependent on the cellular profile installed on the phone WHICH OF COURSE comes from the cellular provide, NOT APPLE. You likely can't choose 3G as the band on your phone because you have a provider who is in the throws of retiring 3G service completely.
