I have noticed that after using my iphone 12 to control music on my homepod mini, my volume buttons won't work on any application (phone, netflix...). They will only control the homepod mini even if this one is not playing.
In order to get the buttons back I need to restart the iphone.
Is ther a fix?

Well now I have say the update did NOT solve the problem.
Unfortunately it happened again yesterday.
As soon as you use the iPhone to control the Homepod it swithches the volume control buttons of the iPhone to control the Homepods and it never comes back to controlling the iPhone 😤
There are well over a hundred replies to this and still no response. It's absolutely embarrassing that this bug has remained for as long as it has. I disconnected and am storing my HomePod mini until there is a fix. It's unusable for now.
I too have had this issue for a long
time. At one stage I raised it in their feedback app but had a response rejecting it as a non-issue.
It is incredibly frustrating and I have stopped using my HomePod because of it.
Tried again this morning on iOS 14.6 and still isn’t resolved.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I very often leave feedbacks but never got a reply. I was hoping the 14.6 that I also downloaded last night would solve this. Thanks for letting us know the problem persists. It is really frustrating. I also reduced the use of the HomePod to asking Siri random questions and asking to control the lights. Playing music is not worth anymore since it messes up everything. What a pity…
Hi all,
So an update - I was in talks with the Executive Team and Senior Engineers in Ireland. Despite several attempts I’ve been unable to reproduce the error since (despite it ongoing for a year). I’ve now moved house and have yet to set up my HomePod again.
Their engineers need a copy of the iOS Diagnostic files WHILST it is happening. I’ve been unable to do that mainly due to some time constraints.
It seems that they’re now aware of the issue but until they can trawl through someone’s diag data they can’t do much.
Problem still exists on iPad Air 2 iOS 14.7.1, iPhone SE iOS 14.7.1, (original) HomePod in stereo pair OS 14.7, HomePod mini in stereo pair OS 14.7. After air playing from Apple Music app to HomePods, the software slider to control any audio source on iPad or iPhone through their internal speakers doesn’t do anything. Only solution is to restart each respective device (iPad and iPhone).

I am having the EXACT same issue.
even if the HomePod is not playing anything, I lose the ability to control my iPhone’s volume and have to restart my phone.
Is this a bug?

Did you update your homepods with 14.2.1?
It seems that it solved my problem.
I didn’t know there was another update.
Updating it now and will share if it fixes or not.
