Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

I too have had severe issues with Big Sur monitor handling from Big Sur 11.2 onwards including crashing my Mac Mini server so that it was un-usable.

Apple support said "reinstall the operating system" which did not help.

The work arounds that were successful were:

  1. buy an SIIG displayport adaptor to work with my M1 Mac Mini and download the DisplayPort Driver. This now drives three screens perfectly.
  2. I found an old Kensington USB docking station that has a VGA port and a Display Port logo. I downloaded the DisplayPort Driver to this machine as well and now my VGA monitor works again and I can reboot the machine !

Clearly Apple monitor drivers went backwards in the 11.2 and 11.3 releases and Apple and Apple support have not recognised this.

Same issue with BigSur 11.1: getting only 1080p when connected.

I read that changing the DisplayPort version on the monitor to 1.2 my help, but on my case it only gets 30Hz with 4K, feels incredibly laggy. Weirdly the monitor show as 61" on the About this Mac window, when it's actually 32".

I tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, SMC, boot on safe mode… nothing works.

The monitor was working fine at 4K @ 60 Hz before the update, I'm still using the same Thunderbolt 3 cable that comes with it.

I just installed 11.2.2 on my 4TB Macbook Pro - No luck.

If I use 2 USBC ports, 1 monitor plugged into each, it works. But any kind of hub that is meant for multiple monitors and no luck.

It used to work so well before Big Sur. I wonder what Apple changed that stopped this?

Below is a screen shot of my specs.

Oh, does anyone remember the mini-display port issues from years back. I wonder if there is some kind of hack like that to enable the USB-C port to send out display information for both screens on a single port.

Just wondering.

Well, this definitely looks like an OS issue to me. BigSur update was almost pushed 3-4 days later my purchase and till that point, I did not have USB C adaptors so do not have much to say, but in the initial days of update, even the power was pushing an issue in the machine.

Now my screens, just start giving different colors. It also affects the applications I use for chat (Slack, Whatsapp, and Zoho Cliq), these applications give a flickering kind of thing.

After reading things on the internet, it seems it definitely is a refresh rate kind of an issue. Used and tried two different monitors. Its the same issue. Tried an HDMI to USB C Wire and an adaptor both. Maybe Apple will fix this up soon. The machines get really really hot.

Same issue here. I'm using a LG Ultrafine 5K and a LG IPS224 Full HD connected to a MacBook Pro 16. The Ultrafine connected via Thunderbolt 3, and the other one using HDMI to Type-C. No issues til I updated to 11.1, when the Full HD display stop working (SMC and PRAM reset did nothing). The Ultrafine still works.

I hope Apple fix this ASAP.

Temporary workaround. Using LG on screen controls, change display port version 1.4 to version 1.2. After that I am able to get full 4k from the monitor but I lose HDR. The display is still incorrectly identified as 27 in screen.

Could you explain these instructions in a bit more detail?

Presumably in the monitor OSD settings (on the monitor controls?). I only seem to have the option for DiplayPort1,2 enabled = yes/no.
