Big Sur - New/Open/Save dialog box -size won't save

New issue on Big Sur 11.1 -- my open and save dialog boxes "revert" to the original size.

I've tried many applications, I've done PRAM and SMC resets, I've relaunched Finder, I've resized the screen (default > scaled), yet... it remains the default, small size (which is irritating).

This is new in 11.1 - 11.01 and 10.x never had this issue.

Hey there guys!

I had same issue here (iMac 27' 2019) with BigSur 11.1 and fixed it by reseting Finder preferences.

To do that:

From your Finder "Go" menu > "Go to folder" and enter

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Click Go.

Delete the plist file.

Then, restart.

I did it yesterday and it's been fixed. Let's see if the issue will come back.

Many thanks for pursuing this to the extent you have...

However, Big Sur is full of bugs, not just the dialogue box issue.

  • MacMail is not counting the inbox correctly
  • MacMail prefs window is still much too narrow to view any list of email address accounts [long-time issue, seriously bad]
  • MacMail count dots now grey on grey background - extremely poor UI design, absolutely horrendous
  • MacMail email message background colouring - very poor implementation, impossible to manage [had one email to send this week that needed it, it failed]
  • MacMail drops added attachments when you change the recipient's name - new bug? just noticed a week ago.
  • Preview immediately pops up with "Open" dialogue box when creating a screen shot - when you need to save that image?!?!
  • TextEdit - doesn't drop the current search until you click "Done" - much prefer you just click off the highlighted result in the search, much more efficient process then having to go back up to the top bar again [pretty sure previous versions weren't this bad] Pretty sure almost all other applications do this properly, TextEdit has been annoyingly doing this for a year now
  • Apps added to the dock automatically - I may be lazy in not searching on this but why does it automatically add apps? Much prefer the option you have to select the app to keep it added to the dock, some apps I just use sporadically, don't want them added unless I specifically request so

... and this is just off the top of my head what I deal with on a regular basis!

So, if you happen to be talking to the Apple team, please tell them to read ALL of the discussion posts on the current state of the MacOS. Here's hoping 11.3 is a much-improved, non-beta version of the OS.

They shouldn't feel so bad tho', you should see my list of Adobe bugs! ;-)

Thank you.

I totally agree:

What we all need is an immediate update. Apple - please ensure you release 11.2 immediately and make sure that any dialogue box that is resized is remembered - at the very least by the app - but I personally would prefer globally. Globally - I would appreciate it if the dialogue box was full screen height or at least application window height [so not to cover the top menu bar] and two panes wide.

So the options are:

  • minimum width
  • minimum height
  • release a non-beta version of BS immediately

Thanks.

I agree...this is ridiculous. We send 50+ individual emails a day with multiple PDF attachments, many with similar names and from different folders. Resizing the dialog box each time so we can see the file name is costing me time and money. What genius didn't check this? Hard to believe it's a major fix since the code was there before 11.1. C'mon Apple, get this done ASAP.

I sent the feedback. Hope they're on it. What a pain!!!

Submitted as well. Here is my response. Feel free to cut and paste in order to save time.

"The Open and Save / Save As windows are super small when they open. To make matters worse, Mac OS doesn't remember that the user made them bigger EVERY TIME! This is so annoying and frankly mind-boggling how something so simple is forgotten with a new OS release. Please fix OS 11 to allow the user to adjust the default size of the Open and Save windows so that I don't have to drag them bigger just to make them usable every time I save something or open a file. Critical fail Apple, critical fail."

When is 11.2 Big Sure available? Also, why use a Save As Window at all? Why not simply open the Finder, on the preferred folder? As an example, in my case, Dropbox. A large comprehensive scope is always better for Save As. Also, whether a folder is opened automatically, the back arrows should always chase the folder above the folder. So Frustrating, to have to click out, then drill down, when you are down only a couple folders below where you want to save. SAVE AS window logic/idea MUST GO!!!
