Cardio Fitness doesn't have Apple Watch as a data source

I update my iphone and apple watch yesterday. But the cardio fitness says no data. When I checked I noticed that it does not have any datasources. My Apple Watch was not added automatically. I cannot find a way to add it manually as well. What can be done?

I thought of unpairing and pairing again. But then it will not have my previous data right?

I have done EVERYTHING. Paring, unpairing. Brisk 20 minute outdoor walk. Monkeying with data sources. An hour on the phone with Apple where they tried everything. In the end, I simply show no cardio fitness data. And two Apple technicians didn’t even know about the "new" cardio fitness feature. This has driven me mad. If anyone has some magic bullet I haven’t tried please let me and Apple know. I have the Apple Watch 6, the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This is crazy.

Finally! I have worn the watch for 3 straight days only taking it off to charge. Today is the third day where I have selected an outdoor walk on the watch, each walk has been in excess of 20 minutes. Cardio Fitness has now registered in the health app showing the watch as the source. Now I will wait for the 2 notification functions.

For what it’s worth, I’ve tried every suggestion posted here (and elsewhere), from the logical to the nutty. I’ve also spoken with Apple Support numerous times since late December 2020 during which they verified that everything on my end is set as it should be and that the activities that I am doing “should” be generating Cardio Fitness data. I have even performed multiple workouts with Apple diagnostic software (profiles) installed on my watch and phone and provided Apple Support with the generated diagnostic data. Still NO Cardio Fitness data and no further word from Apple Support in over a month. The last time I spoke with Apple Support they said it was “a known issue”, they were “working on a solution”, and I would probably not hear from them again until they resolved the problem. Not holding my breath.

I really don't know what is wrong with you but that was uncalled for. I've been active in this thread both trying to help people and responding to what I think is reasonable and that which is unreasonable. An Internet "troll" is generally understood to be somebody who deliberately posts inflammatory messages. It would take a real gargantuan stretch to find anything I posted to be inflammatory. What have you done actually to be helpful rather than complaining?

Yes, I'm sure you don't get it, otherwise you wouldn't be doing it. I know you think you are helping but you are not because you keep focusing on the wrong thing. You seem to be taking the emotional frustration of the people posting as personal insults or attacks directed to you, a complete unknown, which it's causing you to reply emotionally as if you were the personification of the Apple Watch or Apple itself, while missing the real problem frustrated people are trying to find a solution for. The fact that you don't see it, means that this is a problem that permeates other aspects of your like and is probably affecting your interpersonal relationships the same way. Just take a look around you–– I'm sure this is something you go through quite often in the real world–– You feel you are very smart and have the answers to many things, but for some reason people don't seem to listen to you; they're not smart enough to understand you, right? You feel like a forgotten prophet... like a troll under a bridge...

Not precisely responsive to your post, but here is my issue: I have used my NordicTrack Incline Trainer nearly every single day since I got it six months ago. I used to go to my LA Fitness regularly pre-Covid. My heart rate while working out averages from 111-140. My resting pulse rate and BP are great ( I take BP med for that). But my Cardio Fitness continues to show as "low", under 18. I think I am in very good shape for a 66 year old. 5'9, 199 lbs at this time (goal weight is 172).

Any ideas why this thing is showing me as low? I feel fine and have no trouble doing strenuous hiking workouts on my incline trainer, never out of breath or "huffing and puffing." I do have my iWatch on pretty tight so I know it is making good contact.

Thanks all, Gary

Your incline trainer won’t be used to calculate Cardio Fitness so I am guess it’s getting the readings from outdoor walking. Unless these walks are fast, your heart rate is likely not going high enough to get a good read. I would suggest trying a brisk 20 minute walk and see if your score doesn’t improve. Let us know how it works out and good luck.

Thank you for response. I believe it is my Apple Watch that is being used to calculate my cardio fitness. I didn't really think it mattered if I was walking indoors on a treadmill or outdoors on the sidewalk. The article was very helpful! I'm still confused because my walks on the treadmill are all more than 20 minutes and fairly brisk 3+ MPH and my heart rate usually gets to at least the 120s. Maybe I am selecting the wrong workout type on my Apple Watch Workout app and then again maybe I am not challenging myself enough

I had the same problem, and had tried everything to no avail, until I realised that I had my watch on Workout Power Saving Mode. When that is switched on, the watch won’t record a continuous heartbeat during a workout so obviously it won’t calculate VO2 max. Switched it off, went for a walk, and boom there’s my cardio fitness score! Find it under ‘Workout’ in your watch app on your phone.

My VO2 max hadn’t worked since September 2020. I followed the above suggestions about privacy/location services/fitness tracking/heart rate/not on power save mode/etc. Then I went for a 20+ minute walk outdoors (recorded an outdoor walk workout) WITHOUT my phone. That finally forced my Apple Watch to show up as a data source in VO2 max and I got a reading! I had tried this yesterday with my phone in my pocket on the walk and it didn’t work. We’ll see moving forward if it continues to give me readings on outdoor walks/runs/hikes with my phone and watch on, now that it is finally reading data from my watch. 🤞
