2020 MacBook Pro M1 wake from sleep issue

Just bought a new M1 MacBook Pro 13" and when I close the lid and have it sleep for a while, upon opening the lid the screen does not come on. I have to close the lid and then open it again for the screen to turn on, does anyone else have this issue? I have messed with all the display options, restarted the laptop, etc, but no luck. Also running the latest Big Sur update.

When I put it to sleep and immediately open the lid again the wake up works fine, it's only when the computer is asleep for a longer period is when I have this issue.

Hello barrettfromva,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with your Mac not waking as expected. We are happy to share information that may help.

Check out the information in this article, and adjust your sleep preferences as needed: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep.

You may also want to start up your Mac in safe mode to see if the issue continues then: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Take care.

For me, if you use a flash light you can see the screen is on, just no backlight. Not sure if this is the same issue as everyone else or not

I found a possible workaround. On my M1 MacBook Air, I set a Hot Corner to start a screen saver. If I open the lid and the backlight is off, I mouse into the corner which starts the screen saver. When I move the cursor from the corner or press a key the back light comes on.

It a shame for Apple not being able to solve such a major issue for months. The number of "I have this question too" votes has been increasing every day for this discussion. (Also there is another discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252167152) I have been trying to contact Apple Support via phone and chat but no one could solve it. They advice me to wait for a software update but I have been waiting since 11.3.0.

Hey all!

Sorry for the troubles, I haven’t come across this issue specifically with just the M1, but have seen also on Intel in the past.

I could be wrong, but I’d first check System Preferences > Energy Saver/Battery settings, anything you all have in common there?

Otherwise, it sounds like a possible SMC firmware issue, for M1 typically a restart resets the SMC, and as some have said it works after doing so, among other steps.

So if that were to continue, I might restore/revive the firmware on your Mac’s.

For the M1, just follow the steps here:

Revive or restore a Mac with Apple silicon with Apple Configurator 2:

https://support.apple.com/guide/apple-configurator-2/revive-or-restore-a-mac-with-apple-silicon-apdd5f3c75ad/mac

It’s not ideal, but may just fix the problem, the stores can also do this for you, (If that’s what the problem is, and you don’t have the resources such as another Mac or cable to do so).

Hope it works out! If not, I have a few more ideas that may fit a solution to these symptoms.

Hey there!

I did mention this on an earlier post. And this is my opinion because I’ve seen it fix this exact problem, (As similar ones), that the firmware either needs to be revived, or restored:

It may not be the case for all, but for those whom it does apply, this is not an issue with the hardware, so no need to replace, etc. However if you don’t have the resources to do this process, any Apple store or provider can help.

Unfortunately I have exact the same issue with my newly bought MacBook Air with M1 processor. When opening the lid, keyboard backlight turns on, my watch logs me in, but the screen remains black. When using a flashlight you can see that the system is awake, only backlit of screen is not turned on. This thread shows many useful tips:

  • did a full reinstall of macOS 11.4: no luck
  • tap the escape key twice: no luck
  • hot corners for screen saver: this work-around works fine! Backlit turns on again.
  • force shutdown and reboot: this works too...

Made a notice at Apple support but they don't know this problem and can't help. Luckily I'm not alone referring to the many people with the same issue. Hey Apple, what is happening here?

Hello, I have the same problem and it's very annoying, bought mine on august 11th, I've taken contact with apple since 5 days ago and they DONT know what it's happening, also I brought my MacBook Pro M1 to a service provider (official) and all the diagnostics was positive and the guy told me that the Mac is ok. In my case of the Apple support, they will pass the case with engineering area in order to "evaluate" the replacement of the Mac...

I just have one question for all of you guys, do you also have the indicator of automatically adjust brightness in "NO"? (About this Mac > System report > Graphics/display) because on my sister's MBA (intel) says YES, and with a friend that has the MBP 2018 also says YES (in my system preferences I have it activated)

Bought my Macbook Pro M1 in July 21. Been facing this same issue since October. Have been back and forth with my local apple authorised reseller (Malaysia), they kept on reformatting the device to no avail. Have been in contact with Apple Support but still no resolution on the issue.

Discovered a workaround on this issue by using Amphetamine Amphetamine on the App Store

Just remember to disable "system sleep when display is closed" option, the option will be auto-selected once you restart/hard boot the device:

I have tried all the suggestions above but to no avail, I have noticed that the screen doesnt stay completely blank, but very very very dim. Even reinstalling the OS did not fix it. I have a feeling this bug is related to the same wake issues that happen when connected to an external display, in that issue you have to disconnect and then reconnect the monitor cable, I think closing and reopening the lid is in effect the same thing in our case. Hopefully this will be resolved in the next Big Sur update.

In a way I'm kind of relieved I'm not alone in this issue. I've updated to the 11.2.1 as well, but I'm still having the wake-freezing issue as well still since I got this M1 13" MBP 2 months ago. It certainly isn't black/blank. Mine freezes with the loading screen halfway, but sometimes does the blank screen as well. Opening and closing it doesn't seem to work, but will try the double escape thing in case.

I've already run diagnostics and ran in safe mode to no avail.

MBP M1 with 16GB RAM here. It has been 10 days now that my MBP started this problem of the black screen after the sleep (on waking up after either closed or open lid). I press the escape key many times until I finally see the login screen, but sometimes it doesn’t happen and actually I cannot use my laptop. Forced shutdown it doesn’t help either. Come on guys, fix it! It is a professional tool for many people here and this problem makes it so unreliable!
