2020 MacBook Pro M1 wake from sleep issue

Just bought a new M1 MacBook Pro 13" and when I close the lid and have it sleep for a while, upon opening the lid the screen does not come on. I have to close the lid and then open it again for the screen to turn on, does anyone else have this issue? I have messed with all the display options, restarted the laptop, etc, but no luck. Also running the latest Big Sur update.

When I put it to sleep and immediately open the lid again the wake up works fine, it's only when the computer is asleep for a longer period is when I have this issue.

For me it was not from the beginning. One day, after 2-3 weeks from the purchase, I closed the lid and when I opened it, after around one hour, the screen was black. After a lot of restarting and letting it go to sleep mode again and again, it opened like there was no problem at all. Since then, I have always to do the hack with the escape key. Just to mention, when it happened to me for the first time, I had the memory highly overloaded with huge number of safari tabs and other apps open. I mention that cause I thought it was something with the new Unified Memory technology. By the way, I am one day now with black screen only, but the laptop is fully functioning, I even get screenshots and they sync with my iCloud, but I cannot see anything directly.

I may have found a temporary solution. Though do note I have yet to update to 11.2.2 from 11.2.1. The wake-up issue has been persistent but I did notice that it happens mostly when I have App updates pending, and after more than 12 hours of sleep. I had a feeling it would arise when my MBP auto connects online once I lift the lid and wakes up triggering app update syncs. So I tried turning off my wi-fi before I close the screen to sleep. This has so far stopped the issue on my end. I've been on successive sleep-to-wake sessions at different time intervals including an 18-hour break. Do try it and let me know if it does work on your end as well.

However, this is just a temporary fix just like the escape button hack (which hasn't worked for me at all, actually). As vasileios_n pointed out, this is a matter we shouldn't be trying to resolve to begin with. We bought these Mac devices in the hopes of getting a stable and reliable professional tool, so I do hope Apple folks resolve the issue. Will post an update in a couple of days after I see how 11.2.2 fairs with the hack.

I have followed this thread with interest as I am having the same problem on a new M1 Macbook Air. I have the newest update (11.2.3) and have not been able to solve the problem. I called Apple support and they suggested I try First Aid on the disk and if that doesn't work then try booting in safe mode and if that doesn't work then try creating a new user and seeing if going to sleep and waking up as a new user solves the problem and if that doesn't work it sounds like they will suggest a hardware replacement. Just FYI. Will post back if I have any luck with any of these suggestions.

MacBook Air 2020

OS Big Sur Version 11.2.3

I have been having this same problem since the day I got this machine. None of the updates have helped. I tried the double ESC key trick and it worked a couple of times and now it doesn't. I have had to turn off the power-saving mode and rely on the screen saver. I also notice my Wi-fi Type-C mouse is hit or miss (it's not the mouse it's the machine because it works fine on my MacBook Pro). I spent 3 days on the phone with Apple with them having me do everything under the sun from reloading the machine from scratch and every tweek in between. I'm thinking it's a problem with the M1 chip.

I am having the exact same issue. I have access to other M1 laptops of the same make and mine is the only one that has the problem (lucky me). Pressing esc key does seem to solve the problem. Annoying but livable. Hopefully an update will fix the issue. An Apple store is pretty far for me so I am wondering if it is worth trying to work out a return/exchange.

It would appear apple has chosen to ignore this thread not take ownership to look into this issue as it has been going on since this product was released and has yet to acknowledge there is an issue. Not bad customer service for $1400.. Good thing there are accessories and phones that keep me coming back for more of this addiction.. Can this be replaced with an intel please?.. I tried but looks like someone in product management wanted an early bonus last year by heavy stock holders.

Apple senior tech support told me that this was NOT an issue they had seen in their internal reports. I brought up a replacement and he said that they were def not going to replace the HW after the first 7 days because this seems like a software issue. He told me to back up my machine, reinstall the OS, and take it to Apple Store to get help.

I have been a Mac person for 20 odds years now and have always had little or no issues however since my recent purchase of the Macbook Pro this Sleep issue has been a problem and am very disappointed that neither Mac no I have resolve it. Close the lid and if its not opened soon It will need to be powered down, turn off an on again and if lucky it will start up and the mouse may or may not connect. ,,,Disappointing.

I think I found a way around it.

Try this: restart the laptop. Then make sure that all battery and screen off time is at default. Then let computer fall asleep without closing the lid. When it’s been sleeping around 10 minutes close the lid and wait another 10 minutes. Then open it and see if it instantly wakes up into login screen.

If it doesn’t work, try this process again.

For me it worked when I did it the 2nd try. Laptop goes to sleep and instantly wakes up for me now. I had this problem happen to me again and this method fixed it for me every time.

Try it and let me know if it helps. Good luck.

I have the same issue on an Intel MacBook Pro 13'' 2020, tried everything and nothing helped. It drives me nuts, as I never know when/if one day the screen will just remain black for good. I was really happy and get this Mac, but in just a few months after the purchase this issue started happening and it's getting worse and worse with every single day.
