2020 MacBook Pro M1 wake from sleep issue

Just bought a new M1 MacBook Pro 13" and when I close the lid and have it sleep for a while, upon opening the lid the screen does not come on. I have to close the lid and then open it again for the screen to turn on, does anyone else have this issue? I have messed with all the display options, restarted the laptop, etc, but no luck. Also running the latest Big Sur update.

When I put it to sleep and immediately open the lid again the wake up works fine, it's only when the computer is asleep for a longer period is when I have this issue.

I have the same exact issue with my MBP 13" M1. 11.5.1 still has not resolved the issue. I seen one comment that someone said they had to send theirs in for a new logic board. It makes me wonder if this is a hardware issue and we'll always see this problem until we get the hardware fixed... Has anyone resolved this issue by a logic board replacement? Or resolved any other way!?

Thanks,

I'm having the same issue. Never had a problem with my i5 MBP, but started noticing this once changed to an M1 MBP.

I noticed some people mentioned after its been sleeping for a while, but mine does it even after a few minutes. I'll leave the lid open, come back 5 mins later and it takes around 30 seconds to wake. You see the keyboard light up immediately, but the screen is black.

I've also tried the various keys (esc, spacebar, power). Sometimes it feels like this wakes it but I'm actually not sure if that is just a coincidence as I cant reliably replicate that.

Same happens when on an external monitor too. Sometimes have to unplug and plug in again to get it working.

Would love a response from Apple on this one. Also what is funny I watched a video of how responsive it is with switching to external only when you close the lid (which it is...) but it just has this odd issue when you leave it alone for a while.

I've to have experienced this issue on several Big Sur versions, including the latest v11.5.1. When my MBP awakes all indications are that she's alive except I have a snow screen with the spinning wheel of death. Nothing recovers until a hard reboot. From similar comments the issue appears to only effect various versions of Big Sur on several hardware types. My MBP is late 2013 with a 2.3 GHZ Quad Intel Core i7. After all these years, this is the first real issue I've experienced. Perhaps Apple hasn't responded is that they too can't seem to wake up. Hello, Tim??

This is just ridiculous. Apple has known about the issue since January 2021 and they have yet to address it. Various people are complaining... I have several clients that have purchased M1 Macbooks and they are constantly experiencing this issue. Here we are almost 8 months later with no solution. Apple support is clueless when it comes to this issue. What is happening to Apple...

I just bought a new Macbook Air M1 1st September from the Apple website and got it yesterday. Having the exact same issue immediately with my brand new Macbook. When I close the lid and open it after 5-10 minutes it's fine but after maybe 30 minutes, the screen doesn't turn on but the keyboard backlight is there.

At first all I could do was reboot it everytime which annoyed me SO BAD but then I found out if I put the lid down and open it again it works.

This problem just completely defies the purpose of me getting a macbook cause I just want to open the lid and go.

Looked up Apple's return policy and it says you can return within 14 days so I'm probably just gonna send it back cause it's frustrating me so much.

Same problem here with an MacBook Pro M1 bought on Sept 1st 2021. Have to close the lid once or twice for the screen to come on. Mine is an Apple refurb so how did they not see this problem when carrying out the 'extensive testing'?

Irritating at best when using but makes me angry when Apple don't address what is obviously a common problem, particularly when I was on the verge of going PC.

Did any of the earlier posters get any favourable feedback from Apple?

Someone earlier mentioned that under System Information/Graphics/Display/Automatically Adjust Brightness should be labelled 'YES'. Mine is 'NO'. Is that relevant?

I just wanted to add a "me too" to this thread. Late 2020 M1 Macbook Air purchased only a month ago. I can't exactly predict when the issue will occur, but tapping ESC doesn't help for me. Closing the lid and reopening it works 100% of the time (so far) to get the display working. I haven't yet tried screen saver hot corner.

I haven't had access to a strong flashlight to determine if it's the entire display or only the backlight.

As part of getting back to Big Sur, I also did the DFU "revive" option (which is the only way to get Big Sur 'recovery' back.). That also did _not_ fix the issue.

At one point, for no particular reason that I can tell, the issue went away for almost 2 days... but it always comes back.

I've made an appointment to bring the notebook to an Apple Store for a "genius" to look it over. The notebook is only a month old. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or a software issue, and I don't think it really matters. It's not as if the macbook can be used with anything except MacOS, so they are inseparable.

My biggest concern at this point is that I'll bring the notebook in, the "genius" won't repeat the problem (or maybe they will), but send it in for repair anyway - and then the "repair" center doesn't fix anything because they can't repeat the problem. Or perhaps worse is that they "repair" it by replacing parts (or giving me back a refurb) and it doesn't fix anything at all.

I always get really nervous when many users are having a problem, but a company like Apple continuously plays dumb and doesn't acknowledge the issue.

I love mod edits. ;).

For those who might read that line and not understand "get Big Sur 'recovery' back", I had done something that changed the installed 'recovery' on the Mac to something else by responding to an email sent to ALL registered Mac users inviting them to examine a PUBLIC piece of operating system software.

I'm very sincere in stating that I was unaware that an offhand mention of that by name was against the rules. Please accept my apologies.

A quick followup to my above post(s)...

Setting a screen saver to a hot corner, then trying to move into that corner and back out when the issue happens does NOT seem to help for me.

I've determined that the issue (for me) IS the backlight. With a (really strong) flashlight, I can see what's on the unlit screen.

I took the notebook to an Apple store and (as expected) the problem didn't repeat for them. However, they did say they could send the macbook to a repair center. They said that if they send it out, that it's unknown if the repair center would replace the display, main board, or anything at all. He also wasn't sure if the issue was software or hardware (and obviously, if it's software, a hardware "repair" wouldn't actually fix anything.). The only thing certain would be that I'd be without the computer for a week.

I declined for the time being. If there was some quicker repair or even some assurance that a "repair" would actually fix something, I'd probably go forward with it. If anyone on here as had a "repair" done that fixed this issue, please post!

I had the same issue on my MacBook Air M1, 8GB RAM, 512 GB hard drive, so I think it's the same 8 core processor as the MBP. I was having the same backlight issue, on wake, it would stay dark, but if I held it in sunlight or strong flashlight, I could see the screen was on. The way I was able to recreate it was to go on battery power, let it go to sleep and the display wouldn't turn back on most of the time. Closing and opening the screen a couple times would turn the backlight back on. The MBA would wake up just fine if I manually put it to sleep or didn't wait long enough to "turn off screen."

I did the big tests to see if it was software: booted in safe mode, reinstalled MacOS, erased the drive and reinstalled, ended up taking it to the Genius Bar and they were able to recreate by waiting the 2 minutes to let it go to sleep on battery. They tried a revive in-store, but they ended up sending it in to a repair center and the logic board & touchid were replaced. Everything seems to be great now. This may just be a hardware issue.

Oh, this is a freshly refurbished model as well, bought in August.

Good luck.

Does anyone who has had the hardware change/logicboard change still have this issue?

Looking at this thread it appears to have been going for a year, and not been resolved.

I brought my MacPro M1 in September, so keen to get it 'fixed' under warranty rather than wait and see if it improves.

The ESC trick doesn't work for me, I have tried adjusting the auto brightness, and am on the latest version on Monterey (not the beta) - it still does it! This isn't right.

My nearest Apple Store is 60 miles away, so would prefer not to have to drive there and back to get this sorted.
