Slow wifi after Big sur update

After updating to Big sur my wi-fi speeds are at about a third of what i'm used to. Right now i get something like 50-100mbit/s both ways on my macbook and 350-400mbit/s on my iphone that is right beside the computer. I'm on a 500mbit connection and I use the same 5ghz network on both devices. Before updating I got the same speeds on both devices.

I have tried everything from this guide: https://osxdaily.com/2020/11/23/how-fix-macos-big-sur-wifi-issues/

Any other ideas?

Hi! I'm glad I found this thread. I'm having exactly the same issue. Running macOS 11.1 (20C69) Wifi speeds are much slower (only one third or one half of the speed on all my other devices). But the strange thing is: It happens only after some time. Directly after reboot I get full speed of 500-600mbps. But then after 5 to 10 minutes I'm only getting about 150-250mbps. Then nothing can bring back the faster speeds.

Tried everything:

  • resetting PRAM/SMC
  • completely removed wifi adapter under network settings and added new one
  • removed wifi preferences
  • I'm not using any firewall/antivirus-software
  • changed wifi 5ghz channels, MTU size, CTR threshold
  • optimized all settings on my router
  • killed all background processes and unnecessarily running apps
  • disabled timemachine backup

Nothing is working. But all other apple devices in this house (two iPhone 11 Pro, iPad Pro and so on) get 500-600mbps very single speedtest. Just my mac doesn't get the full speed. And honestly this was by far the most expensive Apple product I've ever bought (2849€). So that's driving me crazy...

We need a fix for this problem!

Oh yeah - I'm using 5GHz only and on a dedicated channel - so definitely the right settings all the way.

Same situation as in my first post:

If my iPhone 12 Pro and ASUS RT-AX55 support Wi-Fi 6 - then I should be getting the 700-800mpbs that I'm paying for. My ISP provides 800mpbs, confirmed by Ethernet on both - Mac and Windows - so I should be getting at least 700mbps on my iPhone 12 Pro(Wi-Fi 6), iPad 7th Gen(Wi-Fi 5) and MacBook Air 13 Retina 2018 (Wi-Fi 5). Currently, I cannot get over 450mbps on iPad and MacBook Air, iPhone 12 Pro goes up to 550mbps, if you switch to AX Settings only.

Update 5-21-21

Just wanted to give an update in case this helps someone else.

I tried all the solutions above and they DID NOT WORK for me.

However, I managed to downgrade to 11.3 to 11.2.3 using these instructions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDUYiMIT4jM&t=191s

and these installers:

https://mrmacintosh.com/macos-big-sur-full-installer-database-download-directly-from-apple/

What happened?

My wifi no longer disconnected and stopped saying NO INTERNET so that was good.

However, I noticed my internet was still about only 25% the speed of every other device in the same room (mac mini was getting about 50mbps when all other devices, including an older mac mini, were getting 100-200 mbps).

So, I read this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/9290dr/usbc_adapter_kills_my_wifi_on_mbp/

And it turned out that once I unplugged my HDMI to USB C adapter I got FULL SPEED!

So, to summarize, the fix that worked for me was to:

1 - downgrade to 11.2.3

2 - unplug the USB C adapter

Now, of course, leaving the USB C adapter is not a permanent solution but it is a work around for now. I have since ordered 4 more adapters of various brands to see if the shielding is better on one of those (fingers crossed).

Anyway, I hope this helps others that might have the same setup as me.

If anyone wants an update on the new adapters, just post here and I'll come back to update.

Cheers,

Saul

I'm glad I'm not crazy... I just received my MacBook Pro 16' and the connection on wifi is horrible; I get 2 MBPS vs. 80 on my iPhone and iPad. and no speed issue on my Mac mini either (on Big Sur as well).

I tried everything listed in these posts: disconnect the unlock with watch, rename Bluetooth file, take my network off, restart, and put it back on, and still only one bar on my network. I use a Luxol network, restarted all the routers, and still no luck.

Very frustrating Mr. / Mrs Apple. We need help here, especially after shelling out 3 grands on a laptop!
