Squeaking noise drawing with iPad Pro 2020 & Pencil 2.

Man, I was so excited upgrading from a 2017 iPad Pro and 1st gen Pencil to the latest versions as a gift to myself (Seems I can always find a reason to buy a new Apple product).

Unfortunately I just returned the new iPad Pro and Pencil because of the loud squeak they make when I’m drawing.

It sounds like you’re scratching glass with a dull object, or the squeak of a marker on a white board but worse.

I’m surprised because I’ve never experienced this with my older iPad and Pencil. Even my old Pencil squeaks on the new iPad but the new Pencil doesn’t make a sound on my old iPad. I imagine Apple didn’t design the iPad to make these sounds while drawing lol.

I’m curious to know if anyone else with a 2020 iPad Pro has experienced this or if it was just the iPad I received by chance.

Happy Holidays All!

I'm on the same boat; I upgraded my 9.7 iPad&1st gen apple pencil with an iPad Air 2020 & Pencil 2, and discovered the horrible squeaking!

I installed the same grainy/matt screen protector on both devices (paperlike) and I even switched the nib between the two pencils (wondering whether the worn out nib is more quiet) but no difference! For some reason the 1st gen pencil doesn't squeak on any display, and the 2nd gen pencil squeaks only on the new (laminated) display. I'm having two theories: I need to get some more skin-oils on the new display/screen protector or it might be that the pencil sliding across the display vibrates due to the friction, and, what-are-the-odds, it resonates with the laminated display (whereas the 1st gen apple pencil doesn't resonate because of some minor manufacturing differences). Needless to say I hope it's the skin-oils.

The Apple Pencil uses exactly the same tip for 1 and 2 and is functionally identical, that’s why changing the tip sometimes helps.

The ONLY, but crucial, differences are how they charge - and which iPad you have.

~ The Gen 1 Pencil works ONLY on iPads Gen 1 & 2, plus all the iPad minis. It charges via the lightning tip, stuck awkwardly into the side of the iPad (recipe for a broken pencil!)

~ The Gen 2 works ONLY on iPads Gen 3, 4, & 5. It charges magnetically along the top edge of those iPads, thus no lightning charger on the end.

Unfortunately, buying a Gen 1 pencil won’t work on the Gen 3 > iPads, so save your money. gdimawsy, you lucked out with the tip… but I guarantee it won’t last.

Sometimes changing the tip will help (temporarily) with drag, or scratching (from a worn tip), but not always. For me, the squeak happens no matter how many times I change the tip (which needs to be done periodically anyway, as they do wear down.)

Hope this helps.

My 9.7” pro with the first generation pencil worked great. Apple has sent me three replacement ‘20 12.9” pro models and two second generation Pencils under warranty. The only thing that evens out the screen and noise is a glass type screen protector. Very frustrating since the older unit worked well. I just upgraded for the screen size.

Me, too. With my iPad Pro 2020. I heard the awful squeaking noise when I drew on my daughter's iPad Pro. At first, I thought it was due to the tips. So I went ahead and buy new ones. But then the noise is the same.

I tried the tip on other non Apple tablets and they all fine without the awful squeaking noise.

My iPad Pro is out of warranty already. Are we expecting any product recall here? Thanks.

Does the new iPad Pro has the same issue as well? Is this issue mentioned in any review website so far? Thanks.

Yes, I just received the new M1iPad Pro 12.9" today, and the high pitched very aggressive sound when we are using the Apple Pencil is still present. At first I thought it's because it's new sooo maybe you know it's normal, but that type of scratching sound against the glass really got me thinking I'm damaging the screen or something. Tomorrow I have a to go to the Apple Store, I have a reservation with a tech we will see what he is going to say about it. Cause see this post clearly make the problem obvious and not that much isolated

(Note: much of what I’m detailing below is already mentioned in this and other threads, but it’s worth repeating for newbies. 🤪 )

So… What a shame! I was so hoping I could trade up to the new Gen 5 iPad Pro, but you and others are already mentioning the same screechy glass on it. The word is spreading, but much too slowly, and there’s been no mention from Apple about any possible fix. I called Apple about the screeching on my brand new iPad Pro GEN 4, 2020 iPad Pro (#1), many times last year and every advisor I ever talk to acted like they’d never heard of it… even though threads about it had already appeared in Communities and other venues.

Replacement iPad #2 was much worse than the first. A senior advisor was sharing my iPad screen when I demonstrated skipping and stuttering lines with the Pencil (also a replacement!). She was great, and kept in touch, did data captures and submitted screenshots to the engineers . And that was the last I ever heard about that!

Replacement #3 is somewhat better. I have had to adjust to it: counter-intuitively rubbing my finger on areas of the screen where I encounter screeching, or a build up of a bit of lumpiness (that coating builds up on the tip of the pencil). I’ve learned to avoid the worst offender motions…such as only swiping things with my finger, not the pencil.

Many posters suggest using glass or matte screen protectors, but that defeats the entire purpose of the glass and gliding Pencil. A high-quality glass screen protector was so disappointing; it was like skating on new ice. For the life of me, I could not draw a steady line on it, so I returned it. Some people like the mat screen protector but for my purposes it reduces the visual sharpness of the lines that I draw professionally (I’m an illustrator, The iPad Pro is my canvas and sketchbook nowadays.

Has anyone here done a recent search on the web for the issue and found anything new about it?

Update in my case, the sound disapeared. I dont really know how and why now it stopped, but what I do know is that before going to the store yesterday I whipped/cleaned the screen with an eyeglass cleaner called Omni kleen and also rubbed the tip of the Apple Pencil with my finger and didn’t need to go check my problem at the store cause it was solved. Very strange !

For my case, I heard the squeaking noise of my Apple Pencil. Then I went to change to an OEM tip, but the noise continued. Today, I went to Apple Store and they offered me a new Apple Pencil tip as the solution. The original Apple tips does help a bit, but the squeaking noise is still there, only less frequent than the OEM one I have.

However, if I use my Apple Pencil on any other tablet, they never generate the same squeaking noise.

Basically the iPad Pro screen is exceptionally susceptible to the squeaking noise problem. I think Apple should seriously consider improving their iPad Pro screen coating. Perhaps they can market it as a new "feature" one day.

I believe you are right… It is a coating on the glass issue. But it happens right out of the box. Probably not to all of them, but LOTS, enough for all three that Apple sent me to have the same problem, some worse than others. I think it is much more common than anyone realizes, They’re just not saying anything. There’s just no way for it to be uncommon if many of us have had multiple replacements and it still happens.
