Hi MacBook Pro 2019 version which was working fine but I updated to Big Sur and after that Touch ID is not working and system preference password it is not taking. same password for login is working but not in system preferences.
also not making new finger ID
Same problem. This solved it:
On reboot, I was able to successfully add fingerprints and enable touch-id login.

I closed all the apps and saved everything before do it. Nothing was lost.

Even after updating to Big Sur 11.2, this still does not work for me.
Didn't work for me. Have tried at least three different options. Nothing works. When operating under Safe Boot, Touch ID DID work. This is bananas.
I'm having the same issue - on the login screen it won't even acknowledge the touchID, only manual password entry. Started happening after the latest update ~March 2, 2021

@nfroise you are absolutely right it started working again when i uninstalled cisco anyconnect 4.9 my only problem is we can only use version 4.9
I did not uninstall anything but just did some very recent Mac updates. It is working again for login.
Updated to Big Sur 11.2.3 and Touch ID still does not work for unlocking.
I've tried shutting down starting up and it still not accepting password or fingerprint
