Macbook Air M1 - kernel panic

With a slightly higher CPU load (during the game), there are repeated restarts, pink stripes appear on the black screen. I cannot interpret the reports (they are identical, see example below). The problem does not occur with the same load on Macbook Air 2015 (Football Manager 2020 game running via Epic Launcher and Chrome). Big Sur 11.1.

Hi all, lowering memory usage (from around 7GB closer to 6GB, of 8GB total) by closing safari tabs and some (e.g memory) resource hogging app's , e.g Spotify, resolves this issue for me. Apple needs a more elegant way of doing this, e.g low memory warning, unless this is actually a bug in macOS or M1 hardware.

BTW, I can now use an extra monitor memory again without KP's. Although not using an external monitor requires less Vram used (from main Ram) which may resolve the issue instead (but didn't for me, without closing app's).

Is there any update on this? Many users seem to have the same issue.

I have contacted apple support and not had any useful resolutions. MacBook M1 pro.

Fotenisp,

thank you very much for your reply. Last night I formatted the machine and installed 11.2.3 clean. since I bought the machine there is been at least one, and perhaps two OS updates. I don’t recall for sure. On the off chance an install didn’t go quite right, I decided to take that step. also, I’ve been running a couple of apps that required Rosetta. Those are not essential for me, so I have left them off this machine for the time being, to see if there’s a problem without Rosetta installed. I haven’t read anything about that causing any trouble, but who knows.

We’ll see what happens. I will post back about it. So far no issue. I should’ve mentioned, I am running it to an LG monitor via a USB/power cable. It had the same issue previously when hooked up to an 0WC 14 port dock. It may be related to conflict between docks and something else. The store here in San Luis Obispo is open, I think. So if this does not work, I will take it there.

I'm not playing any games, just one 1080P USBC monitor connected, with just Apple M1 native app's open, i.e Mail (with only a few open) Pages (with 1 document) and lots of Safari windows with loads of tabs (have closed some already)! I'm getting pink screens KP/restarts quite regularly (incl when applying for jobs..). No many peripherals, just Apple Apple keyboard and Trackpad and an SSD. Only 8GB Ram installed with 7GB used, which I thinks the real issue here.

I wouldn't expect Chrome to directly cause a KP as MacOS sandboxes all software running on it. However, Chrome may be using too much Ram (e.g if only 8GB is installed) if M1 SOC isn't very good at managing larger amounts of memory usage (as it seems).

While other software (e.g Chrome) could be running under Fast User Switching, which would also use more Ram, although again in itself, this macOS feature shouldn't cause System (KP) Crashes.

Carson,

Thank you for posting the picture. That instant of pink color is very fleeting during the events I have experienced. You must’ve been quick with a screenshot or camera. Thanks for posting the picture. It looks like your computer is not attached to an external monitor in this picture. Was that the case? Almost everyone has described this problem as tied to using an external hub and/or monitor. Maybe it’s not just that.

thank you

Had mostly the same kernel panic, when I started the sleep mode, with Big Sur 11.4.

The Support should tell me not using the sleep mode anymore, because Big Sur doesn't support it fully without kernel panics.

Nice to see, that this bug is also still on the road without any fix.

"I am not confident that your problem is gone for good"

Alas, you were right. No kernel panics for one month after getting the new HDMI cable and Apple adapter. Then four days ago they began again, up to four in one day.

There's no obvious change I can identify that could be responsible for this - no new software installations, no new peripherals. This is the second M1 computer I've had with this problem. WTF?

I'm methodically uninstalling software and peripherals to get to the bottom of this issue by a process of elimination. Will post again if I find any answers.

Sorry to hear this. I haven't had one random reboot since 7/17 by using the Belkin Ultra HD High Speed HDMI cable. But I recall the last time I thought the Apple adaptor/hub fixed it, one month later it crashed 3-4x like it just did for you. Apple engineers really need to escalate this more. We are definitely not alone, and the media doesn't seem to want to cover it or are still unaware.

All I ask is if any users learn of an OS update or patch to fix this, please shout it out more than once so everyone knows right away.

Thanks!

Hi guys, I'm experiencing the same problem here in France... So I have the pink screen with lines and this is followed by the restart of the computer and the "SID 0 PTE invalid exception" error.

Just to be clear, I have faced this problem twice while I was using the MacBook Air M1 on battery without any external device connected. I am really disappointed to read all this posts without any long term clear solution .. I have already changed the computer by a brand new m1 but the problem is still here.
