iphone 12 pro max battery health degrading

I got my new 128GB 12 Pro Max with blue silicon case on the 11/13 launch day. In the weeks since I’ve noticed the battery health has already dropped to 98%. I’ve only used public releases of iOS and haven’t installed any iOS beta’s that would have enabled extra logging functions that could have negatively impacted battery life and health. Optimized charging has been enabled the whole time, and it’s only been charged with a USB-A cable and an Apple 5W charger. I don’t see any apps standing out as battery hogs, and I’m using my phone as much as I did my 11 Pro Max. I’m shocked to see the battery health drop below 100% in the first 6 weeks, and at this rate it will be below 90% by summer 2021. Has anyone else noticed their battery health has dropped below 100% on a 12 Pro Max?

It has nothing to do with chronological time. It is “80% is normal after 500 full charge cycles”. A full charge cycle is from 0 to 100% (or combinations that add up to 100% such as 20% to 70% twice). And you should never let it go to 0% intentionally; that WILL shorten the capacity of the battery if it happens frequently. Ideally, charge it when it gets to 20%, and charge it overnight, every night, with Optimized charging enabled.

That’s not right at all! My phone is now 89%, with only 98 charge cycles. That means the endurance is approximately cut by 10% already, after just 6 months and it’s very possible that it will fall below 80% just outside of original warranty period. That means it's resell value will plummet as well.

This is the worst iPhone experience by far! And this is obviously a wide spread problem.

...And that is fine I suppose. At this rate my phone should hit that magical 80% by late Nov. (Many others as well)

Heck even it - for some reason - drops to 82% (just an example number) by 1 year, Apple should make an exception and not give us a bunch of nonsense.

I just never seen so many batteries, phones drop to that 80% mark in one year, even less. The issue will grow more and more as I've been seeing the past few months...so either Apple will officially address there is an actual problem with the 12 batteries,....or then may do something shady and change the "health number" by dropping the % for free replacement in one year to 70-75%

We'll see. I don't plan on buying the 13 phones this year..so at some point soon I will need to replace the battery, free or not.

*As I said before $69 for a new battery won't kill me, it's about principal. Dropping $ on something that in the past lasted well into year 2 and beyond...nope, never happened.

**And off topic, when I see my leather Apple Baltic Blue case literally turning BLACK (not patina)...worn down and just uneven and ugly - my Saddle Brown Apple case that started turn black as well...again NOT patina after 5 DAYS (I retuned that), to me I just feel Apple cut back in 2020 and used subpar material and perhaps internals for the phones. Just my opinion!

Congrats!!!

because you are the luckiest!!!

my battery health has decreased to 96 % after I upgraded to 14.5, to 14.6…

the fact of the matter is that after a few months the battery life remained 100% ; After I upgraded to newer version the battery health dropped to 4%== The iPhone XS Max has got 96 % after three years..Now I have a product which is already depreciated after a few months..

the company needs to look into the matter rather than focusing on selling more batteries, which would be harmful for the environment as well…

Clearly in a lot of cases here, the 12 battery's are trash.

I found an older file with my 8 Plus and my XS Max...I did have 100%+ on those (Not quite sure why my XS Max "Battery ID" changed in that 2020 reading)

But these were the same readings I had on my iPhone.

  • 100% on 8 Plus when I traded it in for XS Max.
  • 94% on XS Max when I traded it in for 12 Plus
  • ...then theres 12 Pro Max now. 😐

No, it's not. Many people suggested to me months ago that battery life drop isn't linear, but it turned out it is linear, and it's falling rapidly non-stop. My older phone may have present a different health number, but on the other hand, it may not. Battery health in many devices, including Apple, is simply a number related to the current max charged capacity compare to the original maximum charged capacity, it's really that simple if your battery can only hold a certain mAh compare to new, Apple converts that number to % and presents it to you.

Stop defending Apple, and accept there are bad batteries in the new iPhone. Apple isn't a god, and do make mistakes.

Iphone 12 Pro Max Battery

This is the first smartphone I have had where the phone is lasting up to 3 days even with moderate use before I have to recharge. I have had the 12 Pro max for little over two months now and the capacity is at 100 percent.

I think someone posted a charging tip to never let the percentage go down 30 percent, I tend to agree with that. I also have my icloud back up turned off and that saves a huge battery use. I also turn off most of my app back ground refresh except the ones I need to have turned on for instant notifications.

From the look of it, many 12 Pro Max’s battery health will fall below 80% just beyond 12 month warranty period, such as mine is at 89% from 6 months of usage and 102 charge cycles. This performance is much worse from any previous iPhones I've owned and there is a very real possibility that I will need to pay for a new battery as soon as the warranty expired!

This is unacceptable!

After disabling optimized charging it has been fairly consistent on how often I need to charge. Which is still at the very least two times a day up to every two hours depending on load of course.

During a light use day for me that’s one charge by noon and again around evening time. Heavy use days it’s on average every couple (2) hours.

—This isn’t totally related but just to clarify how I use this device. I’m an extremist with mobile devices. By that I mean I want my iPhone or iPad to do everything a computer and gaming console can do an then some. I’m still waiting for full computer/gaming software on these devices.

I don’t think the average person would really care about playing all Steam or Microsoft games on an iPhone or iPad but I do. I’m tired of lugging around my 6 year old gaming laptop or trying to find the TV available for the Xbox One.

I’m sorry about that I kinda got off track. What I’m trying to clarify is just on battery alone when I hit them hard I mean hard. Gaming drains battery like nothing else so that’s why I used this example.

So light use for me is currently about two charges a day no matter what settings are off that I can live without. For my heavy use which includes that higher power consumption gaming means charging a lot in a day.

I just feel like it drains a bit faster than the 11 Pro Max. I did quick tests for my own curiosity & that was the case for me. I still enjoy both models don’t get me wrong.

My current use and experience means I might have to replace the battery sooner than expected in comparison to the last model.

I know what you mean. I game as well in my devices, I stream my xbox games to my iPad Pro (2018) 11 inch (which has great battery life, and has been since i got it in august of that year) on my phone its limited to Clash Royale. I definitely feel you on needing to recharge after 2 hours. I dont think the device has terrible battery. I just dont think its nearly as good as the last models. Check out this screen shot. Now i know maps can be a bit harsh on the battery but this was only 17 minutes and the music on my device is downloaded, If i was walking, using my gps and listening to music i dont think the device would even last an an hour and half. And that to me is pretty nuts.

7 months now and this is where mine dropped to. It was 95% a few days ago and 96% the other week. I was against having to purchase a new phone (I had the iPhone 8) but because of it slowing down, I got the 12 pro as a birthday gift to myself. Apple “service products under 80% capacity, as that is the expected lifetime for a lithium age battery.” And then gave me an article https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201264

I then asked the expected lifetime since mine was only 7 months old and was suggested to use low power mode or to charge my phone throughout the day…. At this rate, Apple will be losing their customers.
