iphone 12 pro max battery health degrading

I got my new 128GB 12 Pro Max with blue silicon case on the 11/13 launch day. In the weeks since I’ve noticed the battery health has already dropped to 98%. I’ve only used public releases of iOS and haven’t installed any iOS beta’s that would have enabled extra logging functions that could have negatively impacted battery life and health. Optimized charging has been enabled the whole time, and it’s only been charged with a USB-A cable and an Apple 5W charger. I don’t see any apps standing out as battery hogs, and I’m using my phone as much as I did my 11 Pro Max. I’m shocked to see the battery health drop below 100% in the first 6 weeks, and at this rate it will be below 90% by summer 2021. Has anyone else noticed their battery health has dropped below 100% on a 12 Pro Max?

It has nothing to do with chronological time. It is “80% is normal after 500 full charge cycles”. A full charge cycle is from 0 to 100% (or combinations that add up to 100% such as 20% to 70% twice). And you should never let it go to 0% intentionally; that WILL shorten the capacity of the battery if it happens frequently. Ideally, charge it when it gets to 20%, and charge it overnight, every night, with Optimized charging enabled.

Yep same. Got it on release day and 3m later it’s down to 99%. Get a iPhone every year and this is my 1st max/plus phone. Haven’t changed the way I use it or charge it.

other than I wireless charge the 12 but didn’t do that with my 11.

so it’s either something with wireless charging it or it’s a software issue. As when I bought the 12 pro max I sent my old iPhone X for a new battery. Just asked my daughter and that’s down to 97%.

so 2 brand new batteries and 1 brand new phone and they have dropped.

Same deal for me with iPhone 12 Pro Max. I brought this up on another forum a few months ago after seeing this drop 1%, then another 1% after 4-5 days. Today is the 5th month anniversary of owning this - "health" is now at 93%.

Either this is "normal," - which many state. OR my XSMax was totally abnormal, with an inaccurate reading. That Battery Health was 94% after 2 years, 2 months before I traded that in for the 12 PM upgrade. The battery drain I experience overnight (not on a charger) is erratic as well. I may lose 0%, usually lose 3-5%...or this morning losing 10%!

I did take this to Apple back in late Feb after a total 100% battery drain overnight (about 6 1/2 hours!), phone was off, no apps running in background. No reason-explanation was given by Apple. They did do a "battery check" and claimed it looked normal. My personal solution was to wipe out the phone completely and start from scratch.

I do see after 4-5 months that others claim to show 100%, while many of us here in this post are seeing a rapid health decline.

So...what is the answer!!? Because something is not "normal."

No, charging overnight is a best practice. The phone’s charger is built into the phone. It “knows” when the battery is full and stops charging. Then it powers the phone’s overnight energy use from the external power source rather than the battery. This means that at least some of the energy to power the phone (and all but a couple of hours of overnight use) comes from external sources, and thus reduces the discharge-charge cycles that are the principal killers of all batteries. If you charge 40% to 80% all the time then ALL energy to run the phone comes from the battery, which shortens the battery’s life because of the added charge cycles. Apple’s automatic nightly backup feature also requires the phone to be plugged in overnight. All of the phones in my household charge overnight, every night. The battery health on my 2 1/2 year old XR is currently 95%, and my wife’s 3 year old iPhone 8 is 98% (admittedly she is a light user).

Warranty claiming is not an issue. Kindly look into the matter and resolve the issue whether in algorithms, hardware etc., I am using two iPhone other than iPhone 12 pro max. My battery health(iPhone 12Pro Max) has dropped to 97%. My iPhone XSMax retained battery health to 96% since I purchased few years back. Similarly, iPhone 11 pro max retained battery health 97% since my purchase a couple of years back. In all of my phones the optimized battery charging remains on. The previous models reacted differently to iPhone 12 pro max. Apple should seriously think to resolve the issue. Because, there might be something wrong with the model(either hardware or software). The loyal customers like myself would be at sheer disadvantage who did not claim warranty but were satisfied with the overall performance of iPhone.

My battery health for my iPhone 12 Pro Max has now fallen to 90%. I have contacted Apple Support when it fell to 96% and 92% - the second time I was advised by Apple Support to take it in to an Apple Store Genius Bar for further investigation. I did that today and was told by one of the Managers there that 90% battery health was normal for my iPhone and this fall in health was likely to be the use of my iPhone during COVID. I was also told I could have a battery replacement if I paid for it as the battery health of my iPhone was well within Apple’s acceptable use range.

I did not pay for the battery replacement as at its current loss rate my battery will fallen to 80% rating and will qualify for replacement under the 1 years warranty or within Apple Care+ 2 year plan.

It is however, a terrible way to treat Apple loyal customers who have brought to Apple’s attention a problem with the battery in their flagship iPhone.

All apple staff members are taught to answer in similar way, healthy, normal, within range, get exchange till 80% if u are under warranty. My XS is still 88% at 2.5 yr but mym12pro is 94% in 5.5months, started dropping in every week since March. It may reach 80% just beyond 1y. Then i will need to pay.

They answer that way because it is true and factual.

BTW, there are no Apple staff members responding in this thread. Just other users like you.

I’m happy that your other phones are outperforming their specs. That doesn’t mean that all phones will.

The trend I've been seeing on other forums...phones bought in LATE Dec. , earlier 2021 seem to be doing better as of right now (100%, 99% after 6 months) compared to ones bought at launch day, late Nov. which now show upper 80%, low 90% - many with a drain that started around 3 months (late Feb. Early March) after the 12 launch.

And again maybe 1% PER MONTH is "normal" for todays models.

But many like myself are seeing 1-2% drop every 7-8 days.

NOT normal.

If that's what you're seeing, then you have nothing to worry about.

Apple will replace batteries that fall to 80% health or below within the 12 month warranty period.

If you are seeing a 1% drop every week, you will hit 80% within 20 weeks, which is well within one year.

It literally makes no difference what the number is otherwise, so why obsess about it?

Check your battery health in October; if you hit 80%, get your battery replaced (for free) then.

That was the time frame for me. Almost 3 months to the day owning the 12 Pro Max, health went to 99%. I didn't make a big deal over that in late Feb., but then another 1% drop less than a week later..been a steady decline since then.

The every day battery life has not been affected also. (This could be also due to the 14.6 drain bug which is not helping by any means) But taking photos, videos on Saturday - starting with a 100% charge. 35-45 minutes later the battery is showing 64%?? Now I feel I have to limit phone use, pics...video or else I'll be at 30, 20% in no time. This was a major selling point of the iPhone 12 back in Fall 2020. Look, if I had this phone for 18-20 months...maybe I'd look into a Battery Case right now. I'm not looking for one just over 6 months of owning this phone.

*In comparison, I was at a 3+ hour concert 10 years ago with an iPhone 4, taking many pics and video and still left with battery life in my phone. Not much...but it made it. This 12 PM would not last 3 hours, not sure if it would barely last 2.
