iphone 12 pro max battery health degrading

I got my new 128GB 12 Pro Max with blue silicon case on the 11/13 launch day. In the weeks since I’ve noticed the battery health has already dropped to 98%. I’ve only used public releases of iOS and haven’t installed any iOS beta’s that would have enabled extra logging functions that could have negatively impacted battery life and health. Optimized charging has been enabled the whole time, and it’s only been charged with a USB-A cable and an Apple 5W charger. I don’t see any apps standing out as battery hogs, and I’m using my phone as much as I did my 11 Pro Max. I’m shocked to see the battery health drop below 100% in the first 6 weeks, and at this rate it will be below 90% by summer 2021. Has anyone else noticed their battery health has dropped below 100% on a 12 Pro Max?

It has nothing to do with chronological time. It is “80% is normal after 500 full charge cycles”. A full charge cycle is from 0 to 100% (or combinations that add up to 100% such as 20% to 70% twice). And you should never let it go to 0% intentionally; that WILL shorten the capacity of the battery if it happens frequently. Ideally, charge it when it gets to 20%, and charge it overnight, every night, with Optimized charging enabled.

I got my iPhone 12 Pro Max in November when it was released. My battery health starting declining a few months ago and now I find that nearly every 5-10 days my battery health is dropping 1%. It’s been nearly 7 months & my battery health is at 93%, I’m sorry but it’s just plain ridiculous. I know the batteries are different in every phone, but I’ve never had this problem! Also before it’s mentioned, I have optimized battery charging on, I never charge my phone with a phone case on it (so it doesn’t over heat), I don’t let my phone fully die before charging it, usually between 30-50% is when I plug it in and overall my I take amazing care of my phone. I have communicated all of this to apple via their support. The first time they checked the diagnostics & I was told it’s fine & was told to try & reset my phone, okay fine. Tried that, didn’t help! So a few weeks went by, I contacted them again (I had lost 2 more percent in battery health by then) & they ran another diagnostic test & said my battery is ‘normal’ and if I wanted to book an apple appointment to go in store I could. So I did! AND SHOCKINGLY they were ZERO help. They said the exact same thing! That the diagnostic test is showing my battery is ‘normal’ and if I want to replace the battery I have to pay for it. 😐🙄 So I simply have no idea what to do, because clearly a lot of us in this thread are struggling with poor battery health, so hopefully apple does something soon.

Do you know how hard it is to not look at it if it's right there? The temptation is unexplainable.

Sorry, never had that problem. I haven't looked at mine in months.

I really don't want to charge my phone overnight.

Why not? Your phone will fully charge and, if you have iCloud enabled, it will also back up so that, should anything happen to your phone, you'll never be more than a day from a backup.

I really don't want the capacity to lower anymore because I know people who have had theirs for way longer than me, and they're still at 100.

Your capacity will continue to drop until the battery is unusable. That's the way it works. Batteries are consumables.

I might not get a new phone for like another 3-4 years unless of course this one breaks.

A battery wearing out is normal, not something "broken". If the battery capacity drops below 80% while the phone is under warranty, Apple will replace the battery. If it happens after the warranty expires, you don't have to buy a new phone, just have the battery replaced.

for years, i've heard that charging overnight is really detrimental. my capacity will lower for sure, which is the first thing I want to prevent. It could explode overnight. And it could drain down to 99% right after I go out the door.

We've all heard lots of things for years that turn out not to be true. Essentially what you've heard are the old wives' tales of battery charging. They simply aren't true.

The article I linked to, which recommends that you charge overnight, is written by an engineer with 50+ years of experience.

Turn on optimized battery charging and put your phone on charge overnight. Don't put it somewhere that it will overheat (e.g. under your pillow). And stop worrying about it.

I never use fast charge, high power charge, wireless charge and charging socket on car. I will never drain my phone or even like battery to drop blow 60%. If u are doing all the above or having high charging cycles , 90% like u may be reasonable. Look at my old X and Xs Data, this looked more reasonable like many other. New 12pro battery data looks normal now, at least the capacity does not drop with 6 charges.

Purchased from Bell in October 2020.

Today, the 12 Pro Max is at 91% and dropping at a rate of 1% every 3-4 days.

I am still covered under Apply Warranty and plan to replace the phone because of this.

Advertising indicated that the 12 had a better battery. I don't agree.

My 8+ didn't start to drop until a year had passed. It's only going on 9 months and I have lost 9%.

Optimized battery charging turned on. Don't use it below 20% and charge it 99% of the time, at night, while sleeping, at around 35-40 percent capacity, from the day's use.

All certified cables and chargers being used.

What's up Apple?

Good point. Batteries do fail prematurely, as yours did. Apple has diagnostics not available to us peons that can do an in-depth test of the battery and charging circuits. My wife’s iPhone 8 showed problems at 95%; the Apple store sent the phone for analysis and gave here a loaner, because they wanted to determine what went wrong. They replaced the battery and returned the phone, but never told me what the problem was.

OTOH, it is normal for a battery to lose capacity with use; all batteries do. That’s why Pep Boys auto parts stores devotes half their in-store inventory space to replacement batteries.

It can be tricky at times to distinguish normal wear and tear with an actual defect.
