Face recognition

I upgraded from an iPhone 8 Plus to the 12 Max about 2 months ago, so its the first time I have used face recognition vs. finger print authentication. I find I have to revert to entering the PIN multiple times a day (maybe 20-50!!!), which seems a very backward step. Most frequently my phone is on my desk (or on a meeting room table before Covid!) and I want to use it. Because it is typically e.g. 2 feet (60cm) to the left or right of me the face recognition doesn't work (after having had to tap AND swipe up) and I have to lean over it or pick it up, where I previously just stuck a finger on the button and boom we were up and running with ONE simple movement of the hand. Some suggested that the system would learn to recognise my face at an angle but two months later it still doesn't work. Despite being an Apple fan and an iPhone convert from the start this constant entering of a PIN (6 digits now due to some work rqment I think) is driving me a bit nuts and making me wish I could go back to the iPhone 8. Am I missing something?

PUt the phone in front of your face if you want to unlock it, not at an angle to the left or right.

When you first set up your face id, did it ask you to do it a a left or right angle, no it scan your whole face.

Pretty straight forward stuff here.

Then I guess it comes down to the overall user experience and the pros and cons of face recognition vs. finger print. By introducing face recognition Apple was able to lose the home button and deploy a bigger screen. On the MAX model this is of somewhat limited benefit (e.g. most content doesn't expand to fill the extra display space because the display width didn't increase too). BUT by losing the finger print button we now have to use face recognition which is harder to implement in a number of scenarios including the one I referred to, or when in bed in the dark or when wearing a face mask... So on the plus side we have a slightly longer screen, which is good for Apple's MARKETING, but in reality the user has to keep entering a PIN (a pain) because face recognition isn't as effective - in my experience 10++ times a day. My personal opinion is that face recognition is a net loser. I'm switching back to an old 8 PLUS (you can still get new ones) to get back to a less frustrating user experience.
