Comping Genius?

Hello all, This is the situation.

  • I have a session with acoustic drums.
  • 12 tracks, each one a different microphone.
  • 45 takes on each track.
  • I have a “Master Comp” track in addition to these, which consists of all 12 original tracks, semi-mixed.

So, the question is, is it possible to somehow take what has been comped on the “Master Comp” track and apply it to the original 12 drum tracks without having to “quick swipe” each track individually? Thank you for your time and hopefully this will help others save some time in the future.

In order to do that you have to create a Channel Strip Group with Editing enabled.

  • Select all the 15 Tracks of your Drums and choose Create Groups from the Mix Menu

Now you should see the Group Inspector in the Main Inspector

  • Enable the Editing checkbox (which is not enabled by default). Now any edit you make on one of the Tracks will be applied to to all 15 Tracks.
  • Also enabled Quantize-Locked. Now you will see the green Q-Button on the Track Headers. This makes sure that your tracks stay phase-aligned
  • Also, enable Track Alternatives checkbox. Many users don't know the advantage of using Track Alternatives and Take Folders. You can make a copy of a Track as a Track Alternative and try a different Take Folder edits. With this enables, switching Track Alternatives will be applied to all Tracks in that Group

Hope that helps,
