no destination disk for time machine restore

This morning, my MBP only shows a folder icon with a flashing question mark.

  1. I tried to PRAM reset.
  2. I tried to Repair from Disk Utility in Safe mode.
  3. I have now tried to Back Up from a Time Machine external drive, but I am not given a Destination drive to apply the Time Machine back-up to. it is just an empty table where the main hard drive would normally appear.

Any suggestions?

it is an early-2015 MBP that had the latest iteration of Mojave running on it.

Encryptor5000-

The internal drive did show up in Disk Utility.

Verify & Repair did not work, so I decide to try to reformat and rebuild from a Time Machine back up.

So, my original issue may not be relevant anymore (unless this helps other people in a similar position find an answer!)

Once I chose, instead, to Erase, I ran into a new problem in that the process got hung up during the 'Partitioning' phase. Example, the progress bar is stuck around 50% for hours.

I am now packing up for a trip to the local Genius Bar!

[and to correct my original post it is (was - sniff) an early-2013 MBP]
