Cannot get any photos of my iPhone with image capture

I got this error on my Mac Mini with Big Sur 11.1 today when I plugged in my iPhone 12 Mini (tried two different cables) in Image Capture:

could not open a connection to the device module

What is the solution to this? Thanks!

I have a fix!

  1. Lock the iPhone.
  2. Plug the iPhone (locked), into the Mac.
  3. Open Image Capture (it will ask you to unlock your iPhone)
  4. Unlock the iPhone
  5. Enjoy Image Capture as it loads your camera roll!

I had the same issue, the steps above helped me solve it. Hope it helps you too!

I had the same issue too. Restarting iPhone in the past had worked, but not recently (on the same iPhone 12 and M1 MacBook Pro 2020). So I tried a few sequences. This morning, a specific sequence worked:

1) On iPhone, force closed all apps

2) While unplugged from Mac, restarted iPhone. Do not unlock the iPhone after reboot yet.

3) I restarted Mac for good measure. Log in. Open Image Capture.

4) While iPhone is still unlocked from restart, plug in the lightning cable from iPhone to Mac

5) You will see "Unlock iPhone to use accessories" on the iPhone

6) Finally, unlock the iPhone. You have to type in pass code (not Face ID, since you just restarted the iphone)

7) Image Capture finally read the images on the iPhone

Hi!

I was struggling with the same issue. I needed to transfer a bunch of photos from my iPhone to an external drive and the Image Capture seemed the simplest way to do it (and It was).

These worked like a charm for me (OS 12.0.1):

Unplug and Re-plug your iPhone

  •
Plug your iPhone into your computer.
  • Open the Image Capture.
  • Wait the “Could not open a connection to the device module” appears.
  • Unplug your iPhone from your computer and then plug it back in after a few minutes. This will deactivate the port you use on your machine and then reactivate it and it will likely resolve the issue for you.

If this method hadn't worked, I would have tried re-trust the iPhone on Mac. These instructions provided by Apple can guide you through the re-trust [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202778]. But I suggest you try the unplug and re-plug alternative first.

Good luck!
