Cannot get any photos of my iPhone with image capture

I use the Photos app. It had the same problem with not syncing as Image Capture but was also fixed by airplane mode. That has since been fixed by some combination of upgrading to Monterey and IOS 15.1. In both cases (airplane mode and post-upgrade) Photos has imported my photos without corruption.

I've got a brand new 2021 MacBook Pro (M1 Max) running 12.0.1, trying to use an iPhone 13 Pro running 15.0.2. Image Capture would not work, same as the OP.

I can confirm that putting the phone in Airplane mode worked the first try. Thank you SO much for that suggestion!

Well, if you're still having issues, I would do a re-install of Big Sur, run all of the updaters, and see if that helps you.

On my M1 imac, my iPhone 12 Pro Mac only works with image capture when connected to the thunderbolt 4 inputs. Does not work with thunderbolt 3 inputs.

Turn on Airplane mode. It worked for me.

Iʻve never tried to open Image Capture to move photos. But I just plugged in my iPhone 12 and voila, it appears in devices in Image Capture.

Do you have any other device to check if Image Capture is working properly to make a connection? I have a Brother printer/scanner and it appeared in my device list. Otherwise, it sounds like youʻre missing or have a corrupted file for image capture to work properly.

I've had the same exact problem. I've tried re-booting in safe mode, this occasionally works right after and the computer will see my phone but usually not. I just re-installed Big Sur, didn't solve the problem.

Using air-drop doesn't really work when I have hundreds of photos and I'm trying to get them into Lightroom.

I have a Mac mini with the M1 chip running 11.2.3 trying to connect my iPhone 11.

Here's my scenario, plugged in iPhone 11 pro, Image Capture shows it as locked. Clicked on the device in the sidebar of a Finder window, under "Locations" and it seemed to unlock. I had to trust the device in both screens.

Next day, plugged in iPhone 12 pro (14.4.1), and repeatedly get the "Could not open a connection to the device module." error over and over, regardless of what I try. I'm trying to transfer 62GB of photos and video to an external drive. As with everyone else, this has worked for years. I'm on the M1 Mini, Big Sur 11.2.3

Those are USB4 inputs, not Thunderbolt-4, and USB4 is backwards compatible to USB3.2/USB3.1/USB3.0/USB2.0 standards. My iPhone 6s Plus is connected with a Lightning to USB3 cable into that USB4 port. Connect your iPhone 12 with the appropriate cabling into a USB4 port on the M1 mini, and then launch Image Capture.

Are you running an M1 Mac? I only had this issue since I got an M1 Mac... very frustrating. I restart of both devices used to fix this but not this time round.

No totally true, Image Capture have been part of OS X and macOS for nearly 20 years. The real problem is that they no longer run new macOS updates across Steve Jobs desk for the final release approval.
