Cannot get any photos of my iPhone with image capture

I got this error on my Mac Mini with Big Sur 11.1 today when I plugged in my iPhone 12 Mini (tried two different cables) in Image Capture:

could not open a connection to the device module

What is the solution to this? Thanks!

I have a fix!

  1. Lock the iPhone.
  2. Plug the iPhone (locked), into the Mac.
  3. Open Image Capture (it will ask you to unlock your iPhone)
  4. Unlock the iPhone
  5. Enjoy Image Capture as it loads your camera roll!

I had the same issue, the steps above helped me solve it. Hope it helps you too!

I am having this issue also. M1 MacBook Pro (Big Sur 11.2.3) and iPhone 11. (14.4.2)

At first thought it maybe the USB C hub I was using, so purchased a USB-C to Lightning Cable. Worked... for about one day!

Back to the same issue now

  • "Could not open a connection to the device module" in Image Capture.
  • "Please unlock <phone name>" in Photos
  • Device visible through Finder
  • iPhone visible in System Information under USB section.

Tried the usual, update, turn off both devices, restart, unplug etc.

Very frustrating and need a solution.

I'm having the same problem. I have the Mac mini with M1 and iPhone 12 Pro. This process worked when I first bought the Mac mini with no issue. Now my iPhone is full, and I have no way to get the photos off. The Photos app on the Mac mini won't allow me to import either and Airdrop takes way too long for 128GB of photos and videos. I love Apple, but why is it so hard to just allow us to plug our phone in to our computer and have it show up as an external drive so we can just drag and drop photos where we want them?

Same issue here - MBA M1 + iPhone 11 Pro Max.

I am downloading this way many pictures daily, so this is affecting my productivity a lot.

The 21st century, Western Europe, thousands of £ spent and at the end of the day Apple cannot get the most basic feature work properly. Seriously ???

Using Airdrop instead is like using the passenger door if the drivers door won't open - just wow, typical Apple fanboy advice, actually I expected something like that.

The Image Capture is there, so it should work whenever I fancy using it, as I already have paid for it - end of story.

Strange. I have an M1 MBA at work that has one of my copies of LRC and that I have upgraded to Monterey and LRC 11. No issues--recognized the phone's photos right away without needing the Airplane mode trick. Wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that my home computer is where I back up my iPhone so the work MBA doesn't have that added layer of complexity to mess things up.
