Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

I just returned my iPhone 12 Pro Max 256Gb Pacific Blue to the Apple Warranty Center in Maldives (Focus Computers)

Here are my findings.

  • When i first unboxed and booted the iPhone for the first time: The phone booted normally. Apple logo lights up, stays lit up and then boots to OS. NO APPLE logo flash
  • Used my iPhone 11 Pro Max to transfer all data. It did a normal reboot on its own after transfer of data, at this stage i still did not notice the issue.
  • Last night i charged my phone for the first time from 14% to 100% without disconnecting. I uninstalled my viber chat app because i wanted to change my number on it. Removed it and to give a sense of refresh i shutdown my iphone and boom then i could not power it on after even 10 secs. Then i let go of the power button and waited. Apple logo flashed for a sec, disappeared and after 2-3 secs apple logo came on and booted to OS.
  • 3 of my friends took the same iPhone 12 Pro Max, different colors on same day as mine. One of them has this issue came with 14.3 out of the box, 2nd guy had 14.2 and it did not have this issue, he updated to 14.3 and do not have this issue. He even did restore from his previous phone, no issue. 3rd friend same issue 14.3.
  • People are just beginning to know about this issue as no one usually shut downs and restarts their iPhone and let alone keep looking at the boot screen for issues.
  • Maybe more than just a software issue and related to a batch.

Hello,

My brother and me have the same issue.

We bought two iphones 12 at the beginning of January (I specify that we are French). For my part, I ordered an Iphone 12 pro max and my brother took the 12 (not pro), both in 128g of storage and factory set on IOS 14.3.

At the first start, nothing abnormal. I used to turn it off often because still not having received my protection case, I didn't want to use it on a daily basis. that's when i turned it off and back on again several times that I saw that there was a problem. So I decided to return my product because I thought it was a defect and nothing on the internet mentioned this problem (this post didn't exist yet).

My brother left his phone on more longer because he was using it, but there came a time when he had to turn it back on for various reasons. And there I realize that he has the same thing as me, except that he has decided to keep the phone because there is no other problem after it started (he doesn’t care about this issue).

I am waiting for my new 12 pro max which should arrive on February 10th, I will tell you if this issue remains. I don't think it's a hardware issue, so that would mean that all of our phones are defective ?? I cannot believe it.

I contacted Apple support three times, the first person told me that it might be a dual boot but no certification. The other two didn't know anything about it.

I have 3 other friends who have purchased Pro Max models, one of them ordered it when it was released, the second in early December and the last a few days ago. None of them have this issue.

I hope we will find a solution quickly.

(Sorry for my bad english)

Have a good day.

While doing the new iOS 14.4 update (which does not fix this issue), did anyone notice the initial apple logo that come up while the phone is installing was super bright as well (which took quite a while)... but on the second installation restart the apple logo was normal. Interesting yes? Happened the exact same way for both my iPhone 12 Pro Max and my wife's. Some people have been commenting about this burning in the apple logo into there OLED screens which is very possible but I did not see that happen to my phones. I wish Apple would expedit a fix to address this soon... Apple seems OK to swap phones out all the time which does not fix the issue and I spoke to a manager at apple support about this two weeks ago and nata...

I'm glad I found this post. I am heaving the same issue on my iPhone 12 Pro. I thought is a hardware issue, I had a case with Apple, and someone looked at it at Apple store. They said they would ned to send to the lab to investigate, but my phone was within 15 days of receiving it, so I just replaced it with Rogers, since I bought through them.

The problem is that I am having the same issue on the new one too. It's true that first time I opened up, I brought my old phone, iPhone X to sync it and all my apps and settings got copied over. I am not sure if that affected it and if the issue would have been there if I just set up as new and not copying over any settings.

I tried a firmware upgrade to 14.4 first, that didn't fix it, and I tried to erase my phone from settings and using computer too by downloading the whole OS again, but that didn't fix it either.

First and foremost, update to the latest. That will be the first step any tech would tell you. So you might as well go ahead and make sure the phones are updated. The phone with operating system problems, take it to an apple store or call Apples tech support so they can test it, and possibly replace it if necessary. With new phones, they are still under warranty so there is not a charge.

A lot of what determines what level of bars you get will depend on the towers your provider uses and what level the towers around you are capable of. It won’t matter if you have a 5g phone if the towers around you have a maximum 3 or 4 g capability.

My husband and I also bought two new iPhone 12 Pro Max (128). My husband’s phone was preistalled with 14.2.1 (he’s had no problems) and mine was 14.3 From the second day I had the phone it does the bright blink of the Apple logo, then black, then back to the logo to finish startup. I am on my third phone and all had this irritating problem. The Apple chat helper had never heard of this problem and suggested it must be something I’m doing wrong. He had me update to 14.4, but that did not solve the problem. I will exchange the phone again but each time I have to purchase a new screen cover and Apple will not pay for one because I didn’t buy the cover there.... even though it’s their fault I have to keep returning the phone. This has been such a hassle!

Please check if your phone other storage show mysterious overused exceeding 10gB? Apple says they are not connected but I m skeptical. I understand everytime the phone is shut down, the most of the cache in the other storage were cleared but weren’t due to the flash issues.

on the outside , it appears the phone software didn’t really know the phone were shut down , hence the cache weren’t cleared off and kept accumulate to 180gb in my case rendering my iphone12 pro Max unusable .

i had my phone replace but told the staff I still wasn’t confident.

perhaps you can prove my point?

Like hear from you about your other storage space

good luck

Same issue on iPhone 12, unboxed the device and updated it to latest OS and when I try restarting the device apple logo just blink for a half second and after 10 seconds directly shows home screen rather showing apple logo for atleast 10-15 seconds which is normal. This behavior is unusual and seem unintended, Surely it's a hardware issue with the device which might worsen going forward and cause power/device related issues.

Hey I just wanted to let everyone know that I drove the two hours back to the apple store and I returned my 12 pro max 128gb silver G0NF serial number, assembled in the US week 2 production and (ios14.3 updated 14.4 a week later) for a 12 pro max graphite 128gb F2LF serial (FOXCONN). It also came with IOS 14.3 and made me update to 14.4 when setting up. This one was a week 4 production but I am happy to say IT DOES NOT have the apple logo flash!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!
