M1 MacBook Air - freezing cursor and stuck track pad

Is anyone else having this issue?

Writing this for anyone else experiencing the same problem.

M1 MacBook Air cursor randomly freezing.

During the freeze the trackpad often feels like it is being permanently clicked/pressed.

Sometimes the mouse moves a tiny bit with large gestures and sometimes not.

I have seen the cursor move on its own as well.

Sometimes when clicked, the cursor will randomly jump across the screen.

Sometimes it comes back to life on it's own, but sometimes it's the same after a hard restart.

Done a factory reset and the issue remains.

Also happens in safe mode.

Suspect it's a hardware fault. Returning to Apple for replacement.

Sorry to hear you're having the same issue. It was a very long and painful process to get it replaced.

I am happy to confirm the new one seems ok. I used it for a week or so without installing anything and now I have tested it with some non-M1 apps and it remains ok.

There was a couple of occasions where I thought 'did it just pause for a moment?', but i'm fairly sure that was probably just me trying to swipe with two fingers or something.

I have had the same issue with my new MacBook Pro M1! I’ve only had it three days and on day 2 after turning it on the cursor froze and the laptop turned itself off after a few minutes then came back on after and it was still frozen. I rang tech support and they walked me through a completely erase and reset which worked. The next day it happens again. Really disappointed after it taking 2 months to receive the device because it got lost in the post. This being my first experience buying from apple I shan’t be buying from them again.

It seems my new 13" MBP M1 Big Sur (in use since last December) is finally behaving itself. Last frozen arrow appeared March 16 and the one before that March 11. There was no self-triggered restarts during that period.

Logitech taught me how to make my old K480 keyboard work with M1, I connected to the computer a new Steelseries Engine 3 mouse, working in Bluetooth mode, and I am pleased to report that all is well with the system. Even launching my MAIL program, which previously took between 20 and 8 minutes, takes now 20-30 seconds. I wonder if the latter is the product of upgrading to OS11.3 that took place two days ago. Even my 27" non-Apple monitor works properly now. It seems eventually I reached the promised land and after four months of drama I am now starting to enjoy my new machine.

I wish that to all friends.

Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results." Professor Einstein or Dr anonymous, it does not matter. It' time for the Mac community to stop experimenting and draw the right conclusion: This Air is a lemon, as was Ford's Edsel.

I suggest you return it and get a refund towards a new MacBook Pro. Slightly heavier than than the Air, I have found MBP to be most enjoyable machine. Now – with upgraded OS – it is free of any trouble and a pleasure to work with. Go for it!.

Your current nightmare will be replaced at once by a wide smile on your face. Enjoy!

This issue happens on the M1 MBP model as well, I have seen it on at least 3 of the last 14 we have purchased for our users. Also have one that will not mount another MBP that is in target disk mode no matter what I do, nor will it connect the opposite way putting the new one in shared disk mode. No it's not the cable, can use the same cable on another in the stack of M1 MBP just fine and mount in either direction. Apple quality has just went down the drain in recent years since that garbage 2019 model 13" MBP that need an SMC reset every 3 days in order to charge.

I couldn't be more dissatisfied.

I bought a new m1 air 30 days ago and in the middle of brand new project and using it extensively.

This KNOWN issue has made it unsuable.

Others having same problem.

Same exeperience many have described.

I had a call and we updated OS.

I had a chat, with the suggestion I go in.

I went in. Got a diagnostic and told "it was fine".

But stuck around for 20 minutes until the problem emerged.

Then told to leave my computer for 2 days or take home and reinstall OS.

Which I'll do tonight

At which point, I'll have to fight to get new hardware?

Couldn't come in a worse time for project I'm on.

The computer is pretty much unusable after 10 minutes.

Just an awful experience.

Apple really not treating their people well on this one. Anyone else resolve this SIMPLY AND QUICKLY please do let me know.

Bought MacBook Pro M1 March 12 (Friday) and it’s been doing it everyday since. Returned to Bestbuy to show them the problem (which of course they didn’t believe me) but, it happened in front of customer service....he had some of the geek squad people come and investigate and no success. They offered me a new exchange but, I passed. Owned it for 4 DAYS!! Think I’ll wait till they figure this thing out. Annoying. Back to the old MacBook Pro for now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

A couple of times I had my M1 mac use stability....cursor jumping around and much larger than usual. Did not respond accurately to mouse input (seldom use the trackpad).

I those cases I suspected it was something on a web page that messed the system up. In both cases I restarted the M1 and the problem was resolved.

Sooooooo....looks like a incompatibility issue with a script from a couple of web sites.

I guess it’s not just me. Hope we get a fix soon coz it sucks that I only found this problem exactly 31 days after I bought it so I don’t think i’ll be getting a free replacement from the shop.

This happens just every single time I close the lid of my Macbook Air M1 or put it to sleep. Once it wakes up the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad automatically stop working. Connected peripherals like a mouse and drawing tablet still work, as well as my Bluetooth keyboard. I can keep my laptop open and stop it from Sleeping as a solution but that just makes using it so sensitive - not what I bought this for in the 1st place.

Please help fix this, Apple.
