Voice memos not syncing over icloud

I can't get my iphone to sync the many voice memos i have on there over to my mac, and i need the space on my phone. I have voice memos switched on for icloud for both devices and i have plenty of space on my icloud, but the memos don't go over. I also have voice memos from an ipad which have succesfully synced with the mac, but no success from the iphone.


There are a great many (1300+) memos on my phone, so perhaps there is an issue there, although there is ample space in the cloud. Is there a way i can force these memos to go to the cloud and subsequently to my mac? Also if i manage to do this, will i be able to then delete them from my phone (if i turn off icloud) without them disappearing from the mac?


Previously i would have copied them over to itunes, but this is no longer an option in catalina.


Any help much appreciated, I'm running out of space on my phone and i definitely need these voice memos.

Hey there TMandBH,


We'd like to help get your Voice Memos to sync from your iPhone with iCloud.


As there's over 1300 voice memos on your iPhone, it can take some time to sync them all with iCloud. We recommend leaving it plugged into its charger and connected to Wi-Fi overnight.


We also wanted to rule out some basics:

  1. You mentioned running out of space on your iPhone. Having a full or nearly full built-in storage can cause your iPhone to behave in unexpected ways. If possible, we recommend deleting any content you do not wish to keep any longer. Check out: How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  2. iCloud is a syncing service, so if you delete from iCloud, they will delete from your devices also. You did mention turning off iCloud on your iPhone, you can do that, and then safely delete the memos from your iPhone. However, you'll not be able to turn iCloud for Voice Memos back on again. Instead, once iCloud has all of your voice memos, you can export them to your Mac, and then delete them from iCloud and your devices. Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud
  3. Once completed, you can restart our iPhone, which can help also. This link shows how to Restart your iPhone.


With macOS Catalina and later, you'll use Finder for syncing, instead of iTunes. Here's info on that: Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer
