Administartor priveliges for Zoom

While setting Zoom to provide a virtual background I encountered an error message saying I need to install Zoom's "Smart Virtual Background package" with Admin privileges.

I checked the Zoom app info panel's Sharing & Permissions section and it shows "system" (with a one-head icon), "wheel" and "everyone." System is shown with a "Read & Write" Privilege. I've also checked Users & Groups and confirmed I am still listed as Admin.

How can I obtain "system" to "administrator" so I can set its Privilege?

If this isn't the way to fix my failure to install the Zoom package, what will?

That tells us there's something in your account that is the culprit. Therefore download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click and read the About info to further permit full disk access.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to include the report in your reply.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine what might be causing the problem.

Hey jiair!

In a word: NO. Nor has anything else fixed it, except a new User Account on my Mac. Switching to that account for every Zoom call is a pain, so Zoom claims to be working on a fix, but nothing has come of that after several weeks. As you can see, Apple and the folks on this group have suggested all sorts of things. It does seem to be a Zoom problem. I hope the Apple Discussions folks won't object to discussing this Zoom matter...

I have learned that I have another issue and wonder if you have the same. Zoom Support says my email address should show in the Zoom app's dropdown that appears when you click the icon in the upper right corner, shown below. It should be just above the "Add a Personal Note" field. Obviously, mine doesn't. Furthermore, Zoom Support confirms that I have a "Licensed" account, as is shown on the online page (see bottom shot), not a "Basic" account, as is shown in the app display (top shot). I suspect this may be related to the Virtual Background issue, so you might want to see if you have the same disparity.

Cheers!!

While in your original account b into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

The only thing I see that's of concern is this:

Time since boot: About 10 days

It's good practice to reboot more frequently, at least (IMO) ever other day. This clears out system and application temporary cache and swap files.

Reboot and try downloading again.

If that fails log in to the other user account, download and install for all users on the Mac. That's one possible workaround to get up up and running ASAP.

Hi Dick,

I have the same issue, my email did not show up in the Zoom dropdown on my normal User account. However, I've tried Zoom on another User Account as you did and low and behold, the email appeared on the Zoom dropdown of this account and Virtual Background also works. So these problems are definitely related. It seems that Zoom does not recognize that the User Account is a legit account and thus does not provide any rights for it. Who's the culprit, I'm not sure. I'm thinking of moving all my Applications and files to the new User Account, I don't know how long this will take. I'll send a post if it works.

DHuitema,

We appreciate the clarification. Have you had the chance to use the steps in the article below to ensure that you have an administrator user account?

Change Users & Groups User preferences on Mac

Also, have you had the chance to check if the persists on a different user account? The article below can help if you do not have any other user account to test with.

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

If you need further assistance, let us know if you are receiving any error messages after entering the Admin password.

Please keep us posted.

Cheers!

It doesn’t make much sense that it would require admin permission, but not install that for all users. If you installed that package on the other user, all users should be updated as it required an admin authentication. If it just installed for that user, then there was no need for elevating privileges. It sounds like Zoom is somewhat quirky all around.

Have you tried uninstalling Zoom completely, then reinstall?

Thanks for replying. As it happens, I already contacted Zoom. I'm sorry I used a misleading Subject heading for this issue.

Zoom asked me to check with Apple because the issue appears to be related to my Mac's Permissions. When I attempt to download the specific Zoom "package" I need, I'm asked for the Admin password. When I provide it, the download "fails."

The Information Panel for the Zoom app shows the Sharing & Permissions "Names" as: System, Wheel, and Everyone. I've changed all their Privileges to "Read & Write," with no success, so I wonder if the problem is that there is no "Admin" associated with the Zoom app.

How can I change "System" to "Admin?"

Thanks!

Judysings:

Yes, I had checked that I have been using an Administrator account.

No, I hadn't tried setting up and using a new Admin account, but now that I have .... the Zoom Virtual Backgrounds worked! Thanks!!

I hope that result will lead to your recommending something that will enable them on my own account. I don't want to switch users each time I use Zoom, of course.

Cheers!!

Barney-15E,

Thanks for sticking with me!

It doesn't make much sense, but Zoom apparently doesn't check to see whether the "package" is already loaded before presenting the dialog in the first screenshot, above.

Yes, I've reinstalled the Zoom app several times. Since I just opened a new Zoom user account which might have fixed things, I just repeated the process with the same outcome:

Deleted Zoom "Desktop Client" app > emptied Trash > downloaded Zoom app > repeated (previous) background steps > same results.

FWIW, as I downloaded the new copy of Zoom's app, it showed a dialog that said the app could be used by all other users of the computer, so at least some of Zoom's developers understand that concept.
