USB-C ports broken after 11.2 update

Both of my USB-C/Thunderbolt ports on my M1 Mac mini have become completely unresponsive after installing the macOS 11.2 update today.

I had a USB-C to DisplayPort cable in one and a USB-C hub in the other, neither of which now functions.

Both USB-A ports, the Ethernet port and HDMI port are functioning fine. Anyone come across this or have any ideas on what I can do? I've run the diagnostics tool to no avail.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There is yet another option if you have access to a fairly recent

second Mac.

The Configurator 2 app now has the capability to "revive" an M1 systems

firmware, i.e. re-flash. Perhaps there was just a borked firmware install

and reflashing it may fix it (system hiccup, phase of the moon, etc.).

Just stick with the "revive" portion unless you really want to wipe and

start all over.

Update to my case.

Brought my M1 Mac mini to the Genius Bar yesterday, and explained the case. They called me later that night to say they were unable to fix/diagnose the issue, and we had essentially two options:

  1. Downgrade from macOS 11.2 to 11.0.1 to see if that reactivates the USB-C ports.
  2. Order a new logic board (which they say likely would take about a month to arrive, as this is an M1 Mac and parts are harder to come by right now.)

Ultimately, we ended up ordering the logic board, and I took my Mac mini home for the time being. I'm hoping that Apple catches this and issues a fix ASAP, or that one of the press/tech sites picks up word of this issue so Apple catches wind of this a little faster. I'm fortunate to have an HDMI monitor, but for folks who rely on a thunderbolt connection, this sucks. I'm definitely hurting being without my thunderbolt dock right now. 😅

FWIW, it hasn't affected my USB-C dock on my MacBook Air

(only has TB/USB 4 ports). Normally, in this sort of situation

I would suggest downloading and installing a Combo update.

However, in their "infinite wisdom", Apple is no longer providing

combo updates for macOS Bug Sur (no a very good move).

You could try re-installing from recovery which should download

the latest macOS version or download the full version from the App Store.

I have now tried every USB-C device or cable I own, as well as reinstalling macOS and everything else one could imagine trying and the ports are seemingly just completely dead.

I'm currently on hold to Apple - imagining it's almost certainly a proper hardware failure now rather than something that can be fixed in software, but it's clearly something 11.2 changed that triggered it.

I have raised the issue with them today. Did an hour on the phone and it was escalated to a senior adviser, to whom I sent a big wedge of diagnostic data and ran through a few things I'd already done just to make sure.

I'm told it could be a day or two before I hear anything, but I've already seen others on Reddit complaining of the same issue, as well as some on here so it may be quicker if more and more people are reporting the problem.

I'll endeavour to keep this thread updated for anyone else that experiences the problem.

Having the same issue. Reached out to support to tell them that my M1 Mac Mini's USB C ports weren't functioning - although they were perfectly prior to the 11.2 update.

Aside from recovery (which I tried), reinstalling macOS (which I tried) and booting into safe mode (which I tried) - she didn't really give me much to go on. Just recommended bringing it into an Apple store.

... closest Apple store is a near 3 hour drive...

Nothing works via the two USB C ports - phone doesn't charge, keyboard isn't recognized, magic mouse either... Very frustrating.
