AOL is now requiring App-Specific passwords to be entered instead of your normal password. This is part of their security measure. So, How does one create an App Specific password to enter for AOL email account(s)? See below:

If you've activated 2-step verification for your AOL account, you'll need to generate and use an "app password" to access AOL Mail from these apps.

1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page. You can do this by signing on to AOL from a computer.

2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.

3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.

4. Follow the instructions below the password.

- Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces.

5. Click Done.

6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

I "hope" I've solved this problem with Axel's suggestions. What puzzles me is why I had it in the first place. I do not use 2-step verification on my AOL account. Mine is actually the old Verizon.net shadow address that Verizon spun off to the Oath entity along with Yahoo. I see other people were having this problem as far back as February. For me e-mail stopped working on all of my Apple devices (phone, I-pad, iMac using apple Mail and MacBook using Outlook) simultaneously on July 15. I don't recall any notice from AOL that I might be required to take any action). If I didn't desperately want to hang on to my Verizon e-mail address I'd ditch AOL. I wonder if problems are that Verizon/Oath no longer care about support/service since they have been sold, even though the transaction has not yet closed.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this!! Mine had been working perfectly fine up until last night. Did a search, found this answer, & it worked perfectly (I have an iPhone 12 Mini). I'd like to add a few things to the answer, though: To get to "Generate app password", you have to go into your profile, once you've signed into AOL. Also, there wasn't a drop down menu; I just had to name my app (in this case, I just put "Apple mail"). One more thing - I didn't notice where you said above to put in the password with no spaces; since the password DID have spaces, I put them in, & it still worked.

Again, THANK YOU for this. Seriously, how would any of us have known?? How did you know, Axel?

Hello Alicia,

App Specific passwords have been making their way into our email apps for quite some time. About three to four years ago (maybe longer), I had been converting to two factor authentication with some of my email providers. I was therefore familiar with app specific passwords and codes. A family member had an issue with his AOL email (this was about 2 years ago I believe) and I happened to check in his profile and security settings. I found the solution there. After that this solution has been posted all over the internet and can be found with the right search keywords. The family member feels that he may have gotten an email from AOL about this but is not sure.

Thanks for the advice. FYI, I did receive emails from AOL about this upcoming change, so I would expect others did too.

On another note, what do I do if I access my single AOL account email from 2 different iPhones? Do I need to use the same app specific password for both iPhones or will each iPhone get its own app specific password by doing your described process?
