SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Mac Mini M1 16GB keeps crashing and then restarting randomly on all applications with following error message:

I was asked by Apple second level support to provide details of the crash reports logged when it happens.

It is [SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Even when idle.

Steps taken with 2nd level support:

  1. MAC OS REINSTALL.
  2. MAC DISK ERASE AND REINSTALL FROM ICLOUD.
  3. ISSUE ALSO HAPPENS IN GUEST MODE LOG IN.

Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

Hmm, well, that is rather interesting. I do have a Samsung SSD connected via USB. This drive is used for Time Machine backups.

I guess the question is, if that is the cause, how is one to use the unit with an external USB drive, without this issue? And, further more, how would one perform backups?

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, and what Apple advised you.

I have a Timemachine drive and a drive where I keep my work that I work from. The internal drive on my M1 Mac Mini keeps my apps and system files and I clean out anything that may fill it up since it’s only an 256gb SD.

I mostly work with Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. The first error crash happened when I had third drive on which I usually eject but forgot. Weeks later it happened again while working on Photoshop. The third drive was not connected. Could be a software conflict perhaps? It was working fine with the two drives for the three months after I bought the Mac mini. I see many users having the same issue. Hope Apple can figure this out.

I have been completely let down by Apple. More than 50 phone calls. So many in 2nd level support fail to call me at the time scheduled.

received interesting call from a very Senior Department in Apple USA during which i was informed that 13 Engineers are reading this thread great concern. They spent 90minutes asking detailed questions. Suggested I continue with 2nd level support on this matter. I wish i has explained that 2nd level support has not even physically examined or serviced my m1 mini yet, despite 3 months of phone calls, software reinstalling and log extraction.

unbelievable how bad my experience has been with Apple.

Same thing happened to me, twice now with M1 Mac Mini 8GB purchased at the end of February. All of a sudden screen turns green and computer reboots, and the error message is the same "SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)" - whatever that means. Have two external drives connected, but one time this happened with computer in sleep mode, the other time while using Spotify.

In addition to what I've written before:

Apple support reached out to me for troubleshooting, which was great, at least they are trying to figure out what is going on.

I still have my WD external drive connected for Time Machine, it's connected 24/7 and I have not had a AP Watchdog failure since it happened the first and only time. Since that first time I manually put the machine to sleep every night and manually wake it up. Not sure if that is connected.

Earlier today I initiated a manual reboot (after ± 2weeks of running and sleeping) and after boot I got an error specifying that the machine had to reboot because of an issue with the watchdog (not AP watchdog), I've send the report of to Apple hoping that it will be helpful.

I have also noticed that the machine is taking a loooooooong time to boot, it takes about 45 seconds before I get any indication that it is actually booting; screens are black, no chimes etc.

Even if not running, Time Machine could cause issues. But good to know it does not seem to be peripherals as some report problem with no externals and some report no Time Machine running.

Therefore it is most likely that it is all Apple that needs to fix this ASAP!

Apple will keep bouncing it to the users — do this, do that, work with no external hard drives(!), etc. — over and over until, they wake up and fix it… in Cupertino.

I'm getting the same problem. SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired) on a Mac Mini M1 (Feb 2021) w/ 8GB and 512GB. I have a Samsung T5 USB-C portable SSD (used for data storage) and a WD Elements USB-A (used for TimeMachine). It is occurring nearly daily now. I've been watching this thread for some time, but I'm getting a little concerned that it has gone on now for two months with no resolution other than "don't use your external drives." I've started using the Mac Mini for work because it's faster than my corporate laptop, but I'm getting concerned about the reliability and waiting for a significant loss of work someday soon.

Even though what is attached does not seem to be the cause, on Mini M1 I have two USB A drives. One is USB 2 Journaled HFS+ (old box but new mirrored hard drives in it, will be replacing with USB 3 or Thunderbolt) and the other USB 2 APFS but that is the TimeMachine back up.

Also one Thunderbolt/USB 3 SSD APFS (nothing on it yet) and one AUKEY USB C Hub Ultra Slim USB C Adapter with 4 USB 3.0 Ports USB Type C Hub. In the hub is an Apple extended keyboard with mouse in it. Also a USB to my CyberPower back up battery and a USB DAC for 3.5mm audio to speakers.

The Mini was fine for weeks. It has been fine for, I guess over a week now? after the one and only time this happened to me.

I think it is not the connected devices but some kind of system glitch. Possibly related to TimeMachine turning on to back up.

Apple, where art thou? This crash bug needs to be quashed or squashed.

Just had this happen with my Mac Mini 16GB ram, 1TB hard drive, running Big Sur 11.2.3. I have had it just over 2 weeks now and this is the first time it has happened.

I don't have any hard drives connected and nothing plugged into the USB-C ports but I do have a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 connected pretty much all the time, whether that caused it or not though is anyones guess.

It restarted and everything that was open opened up straight away, so I didn't have to wait for 5 minutes like some unfortunately seem to.
