SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Mac Mini M1 16GB keeps crashing and then restarting randomly on all applications with following error message:

I was asked by Apple second level support to provide details of the crash reports logged when it happens.

It is [SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Even when idle.

Steps taken with 2nd level support:

  1. MAC OS REINSTALL.
  2. MAC DISK ERASE AND REINSTALL FROM ICLOUD.
  3. ISSUE ALSO HAPPENS IN GUEST MODE LOG IN.

Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

I have this issue happening to me as well. It has happened about 4-5 times since i have owned the Mac Mini M1 at the beginning of this year. It just happened again this morning, hence why i found this thread. It's ridiculous. I see the comments about external hard drives. I have 3 connected to my Mac Mini. One directly into a thunderbolt port and two connected via a USB 3 hub. With limited ports and hard drive space, of course people will need external hard drives. But it's crazy to think having one connected 24/7 would crash the system.

I was on a zoom call when this happened to me. Green screen then nothing.

No external hard drives, I had a webcam plugged into usb, plus a logitech adapter. Lightning sockets have an iphone charging, and a hub with usb ports, with which I was charging an external speaker and using it for the call.

First time to have the speaker plugged in, on, and charging for a long time (few hours straight).

I find the built in speaker on the new M1 Mac Mini to be too quiet, otherwise I wouldn't be using the speaker.

I've been using the camera for several hours at a time so I don't think its that, I'll have to wait for it to happen again to diagnose further. Sent the rather sparse report to Apple, in case its of use.

I too have WD drive via USB 3.0. Not really happy if that is the reason as it is my data drive. I just moved over the m1 and I am still setting it up for backups via Time machine.. All of my current external drives are WD, not Seagate. Has it been confirmed the WD drives are the reason so I can contact their support (oh boy).

I'm retired and only doing genealogy research, email and other web based applications. I have nothing connected to my M1 macbook air and I've had this happen twice that I know of. It seems to be entirely random. Once I watching a video and once I was just reading a discussion. No time machine... nothing zippo.

To me it is just an annoyance but it is concerning about the reliability of the OS.

I've had the 'AP watchdog expired' reboot once and once only and that was months ago. My WD External drive was then and is now still connected 24/7 and I now also have a Transcend connected, both connected directly and powered by the Mac Mini. I don't think it is the external drives that is causing this, it just looks this way because 95% of the people have drives connected to their machine.

I've had other sudden crashes since then (but not AP watchdog), one in the middle of playing video and a few in the middle of the night during sleep mode. It is possible that there is an issue with time machine in certain circumstances, where the system crashes while preparing a backup? I'm thinking in that direction because it is one of the few things the system will do while in sleep mode.

I just had the first of these crashes that I've ever had. I have a powered hub plugged in. You suggest that powerèdness makes a difference, but which way? Did you mean that I more likely to see a crash when using a powered hub or when using an unpowered hub?

The idea that seems to be suggested regularly in the previous pages, that we should just use our M1s without any peripherals plugged in (or, maybe without any external drives plugged in) is kind of a non-solution. I don't plug in my peripherals just for my amusement; they are playing a role in the work I'm doing. I'm not sure if I'd rather have it crash sometimes or be useless as a work device. Seems like I might rather have it crash sometimes and actually be able to work.

I am kind of hoping this doesn't keep happening. Seemed like a totally one-off random thing until I came here and discovered that several people have been plagued by this happening regularly.

I just had one of these crashes, happened when I was AFK so don't have many details except I also have an external SSD, a SanDisk 500GB drive. This is how the system report sees it:

Nope not fixed in 11.3.1. Just happened to me the other day. Actually using the computer this time and saw the green screen and then the reboot. All I was doing was browsing in Chrome. I have three external drives connected. Two USB3 and one Thunderbolt with a powered USB3 hub. Not an option to not have them, or any peripherals connected. It's a computer, you connect stuff to it and it should all work. Apple needs to fix this.

I have noticed that every so often -- several times a day, I click on something and my mouse and keyboard freeze for 10-15 seconds and the WD drive spins up. There is nothing on that drive by TM backups and the TM was not backing up at the time. If something like this is going on, then I wonder if it could be related to the AP watchdog not being serviced in time also?
