help connecting iPhone to Macbook.. "update required message"

I just got this message: "a software update is required to connect to iPhone" when I tried to connect my 6sPlus to my Macbook. I'm still running Mojave... can I do this software update without installing Catalina?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.14

see the related article.. that update prompt doesn't upgrade your macOS
