Burning CDs in iTunes

Hi,

Traditionally I've always gone with the default burning setup in iTunes for burning CDs. This is with Preferred speed at Maximum and Audio CD selected. From what I gather, this only allows 80 minutes on a CD. I just realized there's an option for MP3 CD, I'm guessing this will allow more songs? If so, how do I calculate how much? I'm using iTunes for Windows version 12.11.0.26.

Thanks for your time.

Recordable CD capacity is typically 650 or 700MiBs. You can store as many MP3s as will fit within that capacity, or record as a Data CD if you want to use a mix of audio formats. You can enable the status bar to see how large your playlist is.

Burning as an audio CD will result in each track burning in the uncompressed CD audio format, 16-bit samples at 44.1KHz. Here the duration of the audio file is the key metric, and you can store up to 74 or 80 minutes depending on the size of the disc. When you burn as an MP3 CD or Data CD the compressed audio files in your library are written out, and the key metric is the size of the files. You can burn up to 650Mb or 700Mb determined by the disc. MP3 CD should only contain MP3s, Data CD can contain a mix of formats, players will generally ignore formats they don't know how to play.

You can click Songs in the sidebar to display your songs in a list view with a number of column headings.

Right-click on the column headings to enable new columns, such as Date Added.

Click on a column heading to sort on that column.

Click on the small triangle in the column heading to reverse the order of the sort.

Click on a track to select it, e.g. the first or last of the newly converted MP3 versions of your purchases.

Shift-click on another track to select a range, e.g. the last or first of the newly converted MP3s.

Now right-click on this selection and use Add to Playlist > New Playlist (or prepare a new empty playlist first and drag to it).

Make sure the list is in the right order, Album column sorted as Album by Artist is usually best.

As before right-click on the playlist name in the sidebar and use Copy to Play Order to make sure this will be the order used.

Right-click on the playlist name and click Burn Playlist.

Select MP3 CD and click Burn.

The unwanted duplicates is why a Data CD would be ideal if the player supports it. After you've burned the MP3 CD of the MPEG-1, Layer 3 (MP3) files you can delete them. Many car players support MP3 CD and Data CD, old boomboxes not so much. CD is old tech, I stopped burning discs years ago. That's what iPods and iPhones are for, all the tunes in one place.

Sorry....a bit confused. On the burning CD setup, I always select "Audio CD". I'm not sure how we go from Audio CD as my selection to MP3 CD in your reply. Since I now can see what the playlist file size is(not just adding up each song in it), can I still select Audio CD and just stay under the 650 to 700MB size of the CD? Or, are you saying, in order to get more songs on the CD, I need to be in the MP3 format? I also need to ask about formats I guess. Are the songs in iTunes ACC? I'm guessing MP3 is a higher compression, less quality format?

The Import Settings button controls what format is used for new CD rips and conversions of existing content. To convert existing content select it and use File > Convert > Create {Format} Version. There is no need to do anything more complicated. Note you cannot convert DRM protected content, anything from Apple Music, or anything that is in the cloud.

I've selected Songs in the far left column(and all 6.6 days worth of songs appear), but in the main panel/window it appears the music is still being sorted by album...which appear to the far left of the main window. If I go to View and Sort By...there is no Sort By Date Added listed. Something tells me I'm not purely viewing by songs. The options under sort by are: album, artist(which is checked), album by artist, checked, genre, iCloud download, love, name, plays, rating and time. Under all those is ascending and descending.

Getting close...maybe not. LOL. Now, the original album that I bought and downloaded from the iTunes store has two of each song. One is AAC, the other MPEG-1, Layer 3. The order of my first Playlist attempt from way earlier is now scrambled, the order of the songs that is. The MP3 version of the Playlist burned all the songs, however, in my test beds ( old boombox and my 2005 car CD player) only one song shows up and does not play. Way older CDs from friends have always played in these test players. The MP3 CD plays fine in iTunes. I know there are always issues with the quality of the CD material. But since the MP3 version plays in iTunes, I don't think that's the case here.
