iPhone text messages disappeared

I have an iPhone XS. It was backed up one week ago. Yesterday, several text message threads disappeared.

I restarted the phone. I turned iMessage on and off. I turned SMS and MMS messaging on and off too. However none of the message threads returned.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the issue is or a fix?

Under settings, I went to iCloud. There is a section that says Apps using iCloud. Messages was turned off for some reason. As soon as I turned it on the missing messages started downloading back to my phone. Hope that helps someone cause I’ve spent the last 2 hours trying all the other suggestions and nothing else worked for me :-)

Thanks for sharing what worked for you AliSoz. I tried it. The only method listed/checked on my Settings-->Message-->"YOU CAN RECEIVE IMESSAGES TO AND REPLY FROM" was-->my mobile phone number... Dang, was hopeful there for a minute. HOWEVER, my iPad settings are totally different. The iPad doesn't have a cellular account and just uses WiFi. This mixed setting scenario could be part of their problem? Nobody at Apple asked me any questions nor were they interested in any information to help them isolate the CAUSE of these disappearing text messages of your *top conversations.*

Hey there! Thanks for responding. Didn’t seem to work for me :( I’m not giving up though - I know they exist. Apple engineers are supposed to help me but we shall see. Have spend the past 72 hours on the phone with apple support. No help! When you unchecked the emails, did you do that across all devices? Because my messages are synced to My ipad and MacBook Pro as advised by apple :( I honestly think I’m going to reach out to a third party data recovery place. Thanks for your help

I too just discovered today missing texts! All of my settings are set to “forever” and “never expire”! The missing texts represent substantial time periods and conversations providing credible evidence in a legal action. The text history has always been available! I want to know where the texts are and what Apple did!

I have an iPhone 12 and my Message History is set to "Keep Messages Forever" yet when I checked earlier today, I cannot see or access any messages from my ex-wife prior to January 2020. I am now panicking because these messages are extremely important for my upcoming child custody case. What happened and what can I do to retrieve them? They were never backed up on iCloud because I didn't think I needed to with the Message History settings I had.

I have a few possibilities:

1) try and see if the old messages will download by pulling down on the oldest displayed message. Some older messages my appear. It may take a minute or so.

2) if by chance you have another apple device that contains messages, your older messages may appear on that second device. In my case I have an iPad and even without another cellular, the messages I lose on the iPhone will appear on the iPad. The iPad needs to be on the same network.

3) Do a complete factory reset on your iPhone (after backing up). This is process is explained on the support site. It replaces some low level software not updated with regular backups.

Number one didn’t work. My entire text thread was deleted.

gave iPad and the same thread was missing on the iPad.

did the complete restore and that didn’t work either. I called apple and after about 30 minutes of chatting they tell me the text messages are not stored on the cloud. I find that hard to believe but that is what they said.
