iPhone text messages disappeared

I have an iPhone XS. It was backed up one week ago. Yesterday, several text message threads disappeared.

I restarted the phone. I turned iMessage on and off. I turned SMS and MMS messaging on and off too. However none of the message threads returned.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the issue is or a fix?

If you're asking about why some messages disappear after being in your inbox for quite some time, this may be due to your Message History being automatically deleted. To check if your messages are automatically deleted, go to Settings > Scroll down to Messages > Scroll down to Message History. If "Forever" is not selected, this is the reason why some of your messages disappear.

To make sure your messages are being safely backed up to iCloud, go to Settings > Click your profile > iCloud > Scroll down to Messages and enable it. Note that you may need to setup Two-Factor Authentication to enable this feature.

Same problem, and I didn’t have ‘Forever’ selected, but never realised this was an option. Somewhat unfair on those with attached personal memories or business-critical correspondence.

I need those text messages back… Apple, or anyone here, what is the simplest, quickest way to do this without using a third-party app? If I have to use one, which is recommended? TIA

I have just discover the same problem with one very important contact where all the messages history is completely gone except one message from a week ago, iPhone iCloud settings are set forever. When I check to see if my messages are safely been backed up to iCloud I see that messages is turned off, when I turn it on I get a message saying “messages in iCloud not available because iCloud and iMessages are different” .This is a new iPhone 13 just bought in January and my iCloud is set to backup every night when the phone is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi, really hope some one can cast some light on this issue because I desperately need this info back

Does anyone have any additional insight about this problem of entire text threads disappearing for no apparent reason? Just happened to me. All settings are correct - set to “Forever”, set to “On” for backing up to iCloud. Ample space on my iPhone and ample space in my iCloud account. All of my text message history from my son has disappeared. There are many things in our “forever” thread that I want to keep and have access to. I have done everything suggested in this thread from a year ago, but no luck retrieving them. There has not been a recent update. How could this happen without me changing any of my settings? More importantly, how can it get fixed?

I have this same issue. Noticed it yesterday May 30, 2022. Only one of my contacts text message thread were all gone from the past few days, however the most recent messages from the last day were there. All of my own messages to him were all there but his were all gone. I did everything that was suggested here is community posts and still nothing. Mine is iPhone X and updated a couple days back. Those messages were all there but as of yesterday gone for just the one contact. Very strange indeed. Regarding trying to get support direct from apple would be comparable to trying to get support from an old worn out bra. Just saying... good luck in your search for an answer.
